I stretch and prime the canvases for my paintings. I have never bought a pre-stretched canvas.
(Where is this art you speak of?)
I think this might necessitate pictures!! I make them too but I give them all away so I sleep under things made by others.
Marinade I make myself when I am in the swing of grilling.
Not all the time, but occasionally I do make my own yogurt. Some other Dopers mentioned how easy it was to make it yourself so that got me started. It is relatively easy, but not as easy as grabbing a container at the store.
Bread’s the same way. I love to make it, and I love how it smells while it’s baking, but it’s just a lot easier to buy it.
I knitted my winter hat and scarf, and a few pairs of socks.
I used to make most of my own clothes, but that was when I was in college and that homemade look was “in.”
In my last apartment, I sewed all of my curtains and throw pillows.
I WISH I could make my own bread and food from scratch. But unfortunately I lack (1) a decent kitchen and (2) time.
chocolate truffles, bread, pizza, stuffed roti, sometimes cheese. I used to make pita until I found a reliable source (nearly all pita made here is slightly sweet). And mathematics.
Making your own yogourt is so satisfying, innit?
My GF turns her nose up at plain yogourt, so I branched out into making flavoured stuff from time to time. Brown sugar and coffee extract, home-made strawberry jam, vanilla, that sort of thing. Mmmmm.
On the other side of the spectrum, before I was all domesticated I used to make my own dimethyltryptamine.
Now I make yogourt, dried fruit, soy milk, tofu, tempeh. Could easily have been baskets.
I want to learn to make cheese.
I can’t even make conversation.
Oh, I forgot: Mayonnaise.
Step one in making potato, tuna, salmon or macaroni salad is always making the mayonnaise. Not too difficult or time-consuming, and it knocks the shit out of Miracle Whip (or even Hellman’s.)
And Sister V, that’s obviously a bare-faced lie.
biscotti…ok, I found the recipe in Cake Mix Doctor, so not truly from scratch, but it’s better than most of the stuff I’ve tasted from stores
Windshield washer fluid, psychoactive drugs, movies.
I want to learn how to make fudge.
Trouble.

[li]holiday candy[/li][li]birthday cakes; actually any cake or icing[/li][li]most Christmas gifts[/li][li]cookies[/li][li]laundry soap mix, most of the time[/li][li]basic cleaning solutions[/li][li]cloth napkins, which Himself prefers to paper[/li][li]dishcloths; I knit them[/li][li]certain household decorating things - pillows, duvet covers etc.[/li][/ul]
Makes note to look up the biscotti recipe in the Cake Mix Doctor …
Twice a year I allow myself to create… then destroy homemade Oreo™ Cookie ice cream.
Mmmm… Come ooonnnn birthday!!!
Hubby’s family is Italian so we make wine, pasta sauce and olive oil together every year (between about 8 of us) - and we also make our own beer separately. His family used to butcher cows and pigs in the garage - thank goodness they buy their meat already cut up now…
I make applesauce, Hollandaise sauce, quilts, scarves, cookies, cakes and as of yesterday, beef jerky!
For food I buy basics and make everything else. Something like bread I have to buy because I can’t make it fresh all the time. I make all sauces, baked goods, and will probly try pickling again this summer for the first time in years.
Computers, bird feeders, bird houses. I make stuff, if I can, and only buy if I can’t. I it mostly because I can’t find stuff that is of the quality I want. I’m having to compromise now, because my hand are to uncoordinated, and anything I can get hurt doing because the hand slipped or my attention wavered I don’t do. I hope to keep all parts of my body with me until I get burried.
Coffee. I mean, I don’t grow the beans or anything, but I’ll buy whole beans, grind them, and add my own stuff (flavored syrup & cream) and make a cup that rivals a $4.50 coffee shop drink for a tenth of the price.
I think this is a fantastic idea. What a great way to get together with your family! Do you live nearby or have a get-together for it?
Ditto. I also make quilts (but prefer duvets and duvet covers, so I don’t actually sleep under any I’ve made). I also make most marinades.
I prefer to make bread at home, but hubby doesn’t care for it once it’s been frozen so I tend not to - too much work involved for just one or two loaves at a time.
I don’t use pre-packaged baking mixes. I have, but I’ve been disappointed with the results. I’ll ‘cheat’ and use cake mixes for birthday cakes, because people want specific flavours and I don’t have proven recipes for all of them.
