I watched Across the Universe this afternoon (home sick), and I know there’s gotta be a thread on it already, so I’m not going to start a new one.
OTOH, I guess we’re all safe from zombie attacks until this gets resolved …

I’d like to start a thread on the new season of “The Riches,” and I’d like to see what people think of the novel (and upcoming movie) “The Ruins.” Oh well, I guess it will have to wait until the search is back up. :sigh:
Who cares. Is it good? It’s one I want to see, but I’ve heard mixed reviews.
I wanted to start threads about The Searchers, Search and Destroy by Radio Birdman, the TV series Search and Rescue, In Search Of…, and of course, Star Search.
But nooooooooo. No searching allowed here!
I wanted to see what people thought of Atonement because I just saw it on DVD, but it’s been out a while, so I bet there was already a thread on it.
I think you can use boardreader.com to run searches on this site still; I did it recently when I was looking up an old psychonauts thread. User the advanced search and search for “your search term” in “straightdope.com”. Here’s an Atonement thread, for example: Atonement is not best-picture worthy (open spoilers) - Cafe Society - Straight Dope Message Board
There are some other tricks.
I changed the viewing settings in the Cafe to “Past 100 days” and sort alphabetically: ‘Across the Universe’ didn’t suck (spoilers inherent, but they don’t matter)
I’ve found the “sort by username” option helpful in digging up older threads when I remember the OP.
Me? Global Warming is a fallacy.
I’d post a “I’m invisible!” thread, but maybe everyone else knows about the invisible feature. (I went to User CP and there’s a button about being invisible, and now I have a red dot next to my name instead of green.) Maybe I’m not really invisible. And now I’ll never know…
Ask, and ye shall receive:
I don’t really use the search function, so I haven’t missed it…BUT, I needed to find a thread from the last month with the word “Yes” in the title (which I couldn’t have found via search anyway) and all I did was show the posts from the last month, then do CTRL+F “find” in Firefox and quickly scanned each title for the word I wanted.
This would work especially well in Cafe Society, as thread titles about current shows and movies will most certainly show the title. And you only want stuff from the past month anyway - usually older stuff is considered “zombie.”
And who cares if you start a duplicate thread? I see duplicate threads every day. There were about 180 threads started about Gary Gygax when he died. Nobody got banned or anything. Other posters usually notice before a mod does.
That’s because everyone who started up a duplicate thread made their saving throw.
Just when you thought someone made the last bad joke…
Heh. I didn’t read any of the threads about his death because I didn’t know who he was until I saw his obituary on CNN.
Thanks. I did not know about boardreader. I will use it if I need to search while the function is down.
What on earth is “I’m invisible”?
See that little green dot next to my name? If I don’t browse the SDMB for ten minutes (?) it turns black/gray. Browse this thread up and down, you can see who been active recently and who hasn’t. Being “invisible”* I think * means it always stays dark, so no one can tell when you’re logged on with the exception of the timestamps of your posts.
Not duplication per se – but I enjoy reading the conversation that’s already started.
And thanks for the link, BBS2K!
No problem dearest** twickster**, it makes me happy that I could help.
I’ve picked up every backward-ass means of hunting down threads long before we lost the search feature simply because I have a short attention span and hate the two-minute delay.
I’m not holding out on a thread, but there are several topics I want to look up and can’t.
This is veryannoying.
