What to do in Cleveland?

Headed there next weekend. Already have plans to hit up the art museum and Rock and Roll HOF. I’ve been before and have been to the major sports stadiums and all of the good beer places (Great Lakes, Buckeye, Brew Kettle, etc…). I’m planning on dinner at La Cave du Vin–but haven’t been there before.

So, any thoughts on La Cave du Vin?

Also–what are some other places I should try to visit. The Arcade?

I’m not necessarily looking for landmarks, but would love some good local spots to visit/eat at while I’m there.

Thanks!

Never heard of it. La what du what?

Go to Sokolowski’s University Inn and get some real food in ya. Go to the West Side Market. Have a hamburger at Heck’s in Ohio City.

Come to the zoo. Visit Lake View Cemeteryand ogle the last resting places of J.D. Rockefeller, Eliot Ness, and James A. Garfield, and see the chapel designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Tour the USS Cod, a submarine docked downtown, and its neighbor, the William G. Mathersteamship.

While you are at the Art Museum, check out the other museums and the Botanical Garden, all withing walking distance.

Some restaurants to consider:

Lola & Lolita - Fancy dining, Chef Symon’s joints.

Slyman’s Deli - Like corned beef sandwiches? Get them here.

Superior Pho - Excellent Vietnamese. Don’t get it confused with #1 Pho across the street, this one is much better.

Anatolia Cafe - Turkish, a bit of a hike from downtown (It’s in Cleveland Heights), but well worth the drive.

Great suggestions so far! Any thoughts on a good place to get sushi if I’m in the mood?

Good: Tree Country

Better: Pacific East

Best: Sushi Rock

The first two are both on Coventry, a cool little street in Cleveland Heights. If you go there, also check out the coolest store on the block:

Big Fun

It’s not really a dinner place; they have a very limited menu. If you want specialty Belgian beer or out-of-the-ordinary wine, it’s s good place to throw back a few. Dinner, not so. After 9:00 PM or so on weekends, hipsters fill up the joint and the music is cranked up.

Yeah I don’t see the Wine Cave as a dinner place…it does have a rockin’ fruit and cheese platter tho!

But, it’s on Coventry if you want to go to one of the sushi places mentioned. You can also try out Tommy’s on Coventry which is a really great lunch place with vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.

If you smoke, watch your cigarettes around the river…

What to do in Cleveland? Leave, quickly.

Go to Lola or Lolita then get out of town as quickly as possible.

Check out Little Italy (Murray Hill). Lots to eat and see, and it’s near the museums. It is right around the corner from Coventry should you venture there.

I wouldn’t bother with the Arcade unless you have an interest in architectural history.

I hear Bahb Evans is good.
