What to do in Curacao by myself?

So I’m going to be in Curacao next month for about a week for a work project. Some of that time I will be, obviously, working. The rest of it though… what is there to do? I won’t have my husband or son with me which will feel strange.

Oh, for what it’s worth, I enjoy the water, dancing, live music… not as big a fan of things like hiking (I have some joint problems). Also, I’d prefer to do things that don’t cost a ton of cash.

Well, if you were in Aruba instead of Curacao, you could look for Natalee Holloway, but maybe they have some lost people in Curacao too…

What we were told in Aruba is that Curacao is tiny. If memory serves, there’s one town and a few villages. Its tourist draw is diving. Beyond that, I’ll bet you can find the usual jeep tours, sailboat dinner cruises, and jewelry stores that any Caribbean island is going to have.

Aruba was spectacular, though, and if Curacao’s anything like it, you’re guaranteed to have a pleasant visit.

There is an underwater park for snorkeling, if I recall correctly. The snorkling there was fantastic. Lots of small isolated beaches, but you will need local help to find them. Then there is an artificially maintained beach in Willemstad (if I’m remembering right-- it’s been years) which is sort of underwhelming. You can tour the original curacao distillery. There are casinos in Willemstad. I recall a couple of fun nightclubs, including one in an old plantation house, but I couldn’t begin to tell you how to find them.

You could do what my uncle did in Curacao for 30+ years, try to convert the natives to the one true religion: Christianity, Presbyterian-style.
