We’re going to be spending some time in Naples in February, visiting my sister, who will be working part of the time. So we need to keep ourselves occupied. I understand there is a nice zoo in Naples, and there are beaches, but we’ll need some other things to keep our 6 and 3 year olds occupied. Do you have any suggestions? We’re willing to go to cities nearby as well.
You will love the winter time in Florida.
However, you ask the question like you are going to New Guinea or something. Think of New Jersey in the summertime and that is what you have in South Florida in February. In fact, in many areas, by listening to the accents, you WILL be in Jersey
Whatever keeps your kids occupied on summer days in Jersey will do fine in South Florida…
One really nice thing about Naples is the public fishing pier; The city of Naples picks up the tab for the special stamps required to fish for certain game fish. At least they did at one time and I believe they still do. And, Naples beaches are great but lather yourself with sunscreen no matter what the air temperature might be.
From Naples it is really easy to drop down into the Ten Thousand Islands; that area is what SouthWest Florida is all about. Kids might not like it, but so what? Kids don’t like to travel anyway.
It is also a cinch to hop on US 41, the Tamiami Trail, to drive across and into the Everglades; you’ll have ample opportunity to stop at various tourist traps for airboat rides, alligator viewing, Seminole Indian villages, etc., etc.
It’s an easy trip to Fort Myers and Sanibel Island; Sanibel has some of the worlds best shelling beaches plus the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, where you can usually see a few American crocodiles plus the usual alligators. Its a great place for birdwatching and canoes are available for rent.
My Darling Marcie and I were married on the beach at the point where Sanibel and Captiva Island meet; it there isn’t a historical marker there, there should be.
Ah Tah Thi Ki and all the rest of that is about an hour away, probably your best bet for a day trip.
When I here Naples, Florida the first thing I think of is Swamp buggy races!!! But it looks like they won’t be racing while you are there.
Thanks so much all. I lost track of this thread somehow, but these are some nice ideas.
LouisB, I can put up a marker for you if you’d like.
There’s always Busch Gardens too, that’s around 2-1/2 hours one way though.
