What to do over a weekend in Savannah, GA?

My wife and I will be visiting Savannah for a long weekend in March. We’ve watched Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, so we’re looking forward to meeting a bunch of drunk, gun-toting high society types, drag queens, and murderers.

Once we’ve had our fill of them, what should we do to pass the time, and where should we eat? We like museums and music, and my wife keeps kosher (mostly), which generally means she orders vegetarian options. So barbeque places with nothing but meat entrees are out.

The dates are March 19-22, if you have any specific events in mind.

Thanks.

The pie shop Pie Society (or is it The British Pie Company?) was very charming.

I enjoyed some long, slow walks in the various cemeteries.

I have directed many a soul to Pie Society. I feel like I deserve a free pie.

It has been several years since I was there. I enjoyed the trolly tour. As I recall it was a trolly that covered the old part of town that you could get on and off as you pleased. Seeing the squares was wonderful. Also walking by the river was enjoyable. The book of Garden of Good and Evil is well worth a read.

Be careful on the cobblestones if you have weak ankles or balance issues. Or are drunk.

we were there in November. I opened a thread exactly like yours…I’m pressed for time but do a search for my threads.
The city trolley is free, don’t pay the $30/person for the ‘hop on hop off’ commercial trolley.

will return when time permits

Here’s the previous thread:

Thanks to you both. Good to know about the free trolley!

Sigene, this trip is celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary!

I’m back
We used the lucky savannah site mentioned in my thread and stayed at the place just over Mrs. Wilkes diner (on Jones Street). It is advertised as the best fried chicken. I would agree it is the best fried chicken I ever ate. If you happen to stay in that same place, you should find a free coupon for 2 to eat at Mrs. Wilkes. They have all sorts of non meat options as well. Its family style, you sit down at a table with a bunch of people and they just set down bowls and bowls of food to share and pass along. THe line gets long if you don’t time it right.

Its easy to walk around, the downtown historic district is about 1 mile long by 1 mile wide with lots of squares to walk through. Forsyth Park is quite the open space with the famous fountain. We didn’t do a lot of things as we only had a long weekend like you are planning, but I think the carriage rides and a ghost oriented tour might have been fun.
We basically rode the free trolley to the next restaurant, went to the river waterfront, walked around the squares and cemetery, looked at the architecture.

I would absolutely recommend the Lucky Savannah group to find your place downtown. I would NOT pick a ‘standard’ hotel that is outside of the historic district.
We did not take the 30 min drive to the beach but we did ride the free ferry across the river and around.
