What to See and Do in Washington DC - an Informative MMP

I don’t even know who the second dude is, but evidently Gitta Ogg. This is because Esme Weatherwax doesn’t get into fights.

Use as needed, they keep well.

Lunch, these things always remind me of a picture I took of some graffito in San Francisco. I should scan and post it. It said something like: “My people, your people… when will we realize we’re all one people?”

(((((Lunch))))) - I caught the story on the news last night and though of you, must be tough out there just now.

((((Taters))))) - no idea what’s happening in your corner but you can have as many hugs as you need.

Pie, are you cured yet? Have you been back to slap your doc round the chops with a wet fish?

I’s been absent a while, things have just been a bit on the stupidly busy side over here! It’s got to the point where I am only posting this morning because I’ve got the day off and have a few spare minutes to sit here. Anyway, a brief catch up on Faeworld - despite Tin Knickers being mad as a box of frogs, work actually hasn’t been that bad. I’ve managed to get a lot of stuff done in the last week or so which has cleared up jobs that have been hanging around for far too long. Sorted out a load of meetings and got the endure the hell of two days of validation fees (not my job, nowhere near my grade, but somebody’s got to do it…) so now I’m feeling slightly more in control of things there.

On the social side, I’ve been in Belgium for a while as four of us went over last Friday on the Eurostar - have to say that the new terminal in St Pancras is a vast improvement over the facilities at Waterloo. They’ve even got a champagne bar…well, that was the perfect place to sit and wait for our friend Anna to meet us, wasn’t it? After that we went to buy some food and wine, and had a picnic on the train which was fun. The hotel we stayed in was great, really quiet street and only a short stagger from the Casino where we went on Saturday for the Dead Rat Ball. A group of our friends had gone to the ball but they went on a coach trip so they had to leave on Sunday morning at about 11am, I did spare them a thought as I was snuggled in my bed! We had a lazy Sunday, watched the carnival parade in the main square, had a leisurely meal and wandered along the beach for a while.

After we met the other two, we headed up to a favourite bar and stayed there for a while, departed briefly for a meal in the Greek place down the street and were in bed by about 1am. We spent most of Monday travelling home and eventually arrived around 4pm so that was a nicely relaxed journey back.

Tuesday I was back at work for the day, dealing with the usual urgent stuff TK manages to dream up, and then in the evening we went to see comedian Richard Herring’s “Oh fuck, I’m 40” solo stand-up performance. I’m still haunted by the idea of the 600 million judgemental babies in heaven…I could be scarred for life!

Wednesday saw a visit to the eye horsepickle to get some treatment for yet another ulcer, a tiny thing that was so stupidly painful it was untrue. Doc gave me some ointment and a kickstart of steroid drops and instructions to stay out of bright lights. Err…well…that evening’s convalescence was done in the pub with the help of a couple of beerverages.

Thursday was another hectic day at work getting the fees work finished and sorting out some other idiot problems. Then we were off to the Civic Hall to see The Levellers on their 20th anniversary tour. Oh dear. Yes. 20 years ago. Hmmm…well the first time I saw them was that long ago in a pub in Brighton.

Gerroff my lawn, you impudent whippersnappers!

Hugs and prayers offered for SpecialOne and lots of hugs and understanding for Taters.

Welcome back, BooFae! Sounds like you had a great little vacation. Sorry to hear about the ulcer, but thinking get well thoughts for you. What is the Eurostar, btw? Is it a ferry?

Up and caffeinating here. We’re supposed to get rain starting this afternoon, continuing all night and into tomorrow. Bah, I want to go out tomorrow morning but this rain is going to make traveling via public transit a nasty thing. I think I’ll probably still go though - it’s Trader Joe’s and I wanna go!

And it’s finally Firday, so YAY!!! Enjoy your Friday all.

I think this captures the problem exactly. How many people (including me, sadly, some days) aren’t able to come to this realization? And it worries me that there are a lot of situations where the rifts are so deep that many people can’t even imagine thinking about the other side as “my people.”

SO, I’m hoping SpecialTeen’s school isn’t anywhere near that attack…? (Forgot to say this yesterday.)

Hi BooFae! Glad you had time to stop by and say hi.

Yay on non-closed threads for beebs! ::hands him more cake::

It’s FIRDAY!!!

Have I mentioned it’s been a long week?

Guess I should think about breakfast.

GT

Drive-by except to say {{{Noonie}}}. I didn’t know anything about it until just now.

Gotta run and make breakfast.

No, it’s a train that runs between London and Paris or Brussels. The really high-speed service goes from London to Brussels in 1hr 59mins now that they’ve opened the new terminal at St Pancras station.

The shortest ferry crossing from Dover to Calais takes about an hour to cross the Channel but the train goes through the tunnel in about 20mins. It’s ok as long as you don’t think about all that water on top of you…

Good Mornin’ Y’all! It’s a rainy Firday here, really pourin’ outside! Makes for such a fun ride to work. I’m caffienatin’ prior to work purtification. It’s hard for me to motivate on a rainy mornin’, especially a rainy Firday mornin’, but, alas, motivate I must.

Ok, time for some more starter fluid then to my purtification chamber.

Happy Firday Y’all! Or whatever it is wherever you are.

We’re supposed to get a foot of snow by tomorrow.

Thanks for the thoughts, everybody!

It’s horrible, but not in the same nation-changing way 9/11 was – for the vast majority of us it’s more like “yet another school shooting” (apologies, MBG – it’s never “just another” anything, when it’s personal!) If anybody thinks they’re going to get us to put our collective tail between our legs and scamper using these tactics, they’ve got another one coming.

Special Teen was indeed in Jerusalem yesterday (she’s home now – planned weekend at home in any case); her school is at least 2 miles away from the scene of the crime. In fact – typical non-news-following teenager that she is – she heard about it from us.

Only change in our personal plans was that I drove to Jerusalem to pick her up instead of leaving her to take buses home as usual.

Hi Taters! Hope things look up for you soon.

Sounds like you had loads of fun, Boo

Morning. Caffenating, the work. Gonna sack another employee today for stealing.

I have no clue about that matchup. What I want to see is Dumbledore and Gandalf put that idiot wizard from the Alltel commercial out of my misery.

Morning all! Been a crazy two weeks with my daughter switching schools mid-year. This week was up and down for her, I expected a longer “honeymoon” period, frankly, but she is a creature of habit and even welcome change is very stressful for her.

Her brother goes to an Independent school for middle school after doing K-5 at our local school. We had decided to move the little one there for 5th grade (next year). When she was interviewing she told anyone who would listen that she needed to be here now and should not go back to her 4th grade class. We all agreed and in a matter of a week moved her over.

Here’s the kicker: my sis is the principal of her old school. It’s been an interesting few weeks dealing with the fallout of that.

But, she seems really happy today and got invited over to a new friend’s house to play (the first time in a long time a friend has invited her over)- she is so excited. She fits in like a glove with the other kids at this new school.

However, she has cried every night just to release the stress of being new, not knowing the routine (did I mention she likes routine?) and trying to catch up. I feel very emotionally drained as well. But- it’s definitely getting better and I see she’s settling in.

So, that’s been my week. How’s yours been?

Ok, I’m all caught up now.

Taters, just wanted to say that the MMP can take whatever sad depressing story that you have to give. I know this from experience in my sad/suicidal days during the drug study. So don’t hesitate to darken our proverbial door anytime.

BooFae, after a trip to the ER, I am finally on the mend and looking for a new doctor.

Which reminds me… Here’s my dumb question of the day. What’s the difference between a ‘family’ doctor and an ‘internal medicine’ doctor? And, more importantly, can an internal medicine guy be my primary doctor?

Also, I’m not going to link to it because I’m too lazy, however, the guinea pig thread cracked me up. Especially because one of my employees is originally from Ecuador and talked about her mom making guinea pig on the grill.

Family med docs can do pediatrics, GYN, it’s a more general specialty, especially if you want your whole family to have the same doctor. Internal medicine is less generalized and is most often used by adults, perhaps with some chronic illnesses for overall management, in conjunction with any specialists.

Both can be used as a primary care. Hubby and I have a family med doctor, but the kids still go to a ped and I use a separate Gyn. He’s just a great doctor- I had to switch doctors til I found one who I could work with. It’s like dating- I had to dump a few losers first!

Thank Og It’s Firday

's’all I got for now

You’ve got it wrong. Try:

Thank Og It’s Teh Firday
Gooses Rosie

I agree with the “Thank Og It’s Friday.”

(((((((No1))))))))

(((((Taters))))) Stop in any time, you hear? We’re great at celebrating good things and commiserating through bad ones. It’s why we’re here. That’s what friends do, internet or otherwise.

(Haze) at least you have something of an answer…Don’t forget about us if you go to Korea. Out of curiousity, have you looked into smaller schools? I don’t know if it matters, but a lot of smaller schools are more willing to jump through the hoops for teachers (and students) because they have a harder time getting people.

Pie , I use an Internal medicine doctor as my primary care doctor.

Congrats on the thread Beebs!!

I signed up for a two hour beginner’s yoga class tomorrow. I’ve done yoga, but it was a gentle Hatha yoga. I’m kind of nervous about “Power Yoga.” I’m in awful shape right now, and though I’m trying to change that, I’m kind of nervous I’m going to be the only ungraceful person in a room full of coordinated size sixes. Plus, I got a yoga mat a couple of weeks ago from Target thinking I could practice what I did before, but alas the mat sucks. So, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I can use one of the studio’s, but that thought kind of makes me :dubious: Ugh. I’ve found some potential things on amazon, but nothing that I could have for tomorrow. So I didn’t even bother to order one when I did the searching yesterday.

I also bought some hand weights to use while walking, but they didn’t feel right when I tried to use them last night. I don’t know if it’s me or them…or both.

There’s more than one Eurostar now? I have traveled on the one out of Waterloo, and thought that was damned near perfect… Now I want to go to Brussels (well, maybe not).
Internist specializes in adult diseases w/o a surgical treatment (although if you are found to have appendicitis at the internist, s/he will refer you on!); family doc aka general practitioner is the old time type doc (think Marcus Welby)–they are generalists in health maintenance and can see and treat the whole family. It’s personal preference; but most GPs will refer on any truly complex issues.

My primary doc is an endocrinologist–more specialized than an internist. But I see a GYN for female stuff and a dermatologist for really expensive skin lotion, and really don’t need anything else. YMMV.
I need to do a bunch of stuff today. I picked up my guitar yesterday, sure I could figure out how to play one chord. Completely baffles me. I think this is something I cannot learn via book. The book wants me to learn how to read music first. Hmmmm. I think I might wait until May or for a day when I have more patience.
I have stupid effing homework to do today. I am SO done with this grad school stuff. My 'tude has gone from bad to worse. I could gripe all day about it.

Og! What a morning. I heartily concur with Thank Og it’s (teh) Firday!

{{{{{{Taters}}}}}}} Even when it feels like the walls are closing in and there’s no crawling out of the darkness, please try to remember you’re not alone and that you’re always welcome to share your thoughts - even the not-so-shiny-happy ones. We’ve all been there at some point, trust me.

{{Haze}} Sorry about the visa situation. I’ve got several friends who currently live in the US and they’ve had their share of horror stories about their idiot visa policies. I hope that you get a better answer from School #2.

I’ve taken care of brekkie and caffeine, and just had a lovely discussion with Teh Boss about the fact that I like staying busy and all, but that I refuse to invent work for myself just so I have something to do. I think it’s sinking in. ::knocks on wood::

I get to meet some Dopers tonight! Wheeee. Dopers don’t bite, right? Should I get my rabies shots in advance, just in case?

ETA: Mouse, I’d just use your crappy yoga mat this time around, and maybe pad it up a bit by laying it over one of the studio’s mats. I do this all the time. Yoga is Good Stuff… Power Yoga is very similar to Hatha, except that the positions change more frequently to keep the energy flowing. Think lots of Sun Salutations and shifts through the Warrior poses.
