What to see in Charleston, SC?

My wife has to have a procedure done in Charleston in a few weeks and we were going to go a few days early to enjoy ourselves before she has the procedure.

Any good advice on what to do? We will only have a day or two.

I assume we will do Fort Sumter and a Dinner Cruise around the harbor. Anything else?

If we hit a historic home, any good ones we shouldn’t miss? Any famous homes in the area?

Hmmm. Like everyone ELSE who started a thread on Charleston, I shoulda searched first…

For me, no visit to Charleston feels complete without walking the length of the Battery and feeding seagulls or letting the kids play around the old cannon battlements.

There’s walking tours of the area and horse carriage rides. Visit the old slave Market for lots of handcrafted curios but don’t take pictures of the basket weavers without permission: they don’t like that, especially if you’re not buying anything.

My favorite seafood downtown resturant is A.W. Shucks on State Street. Mmmm-mmm. I can eat baskets of those hush puppies! Fresh seafood, not like the frozen crap I have to suffer here in Ohio at outrageous prices.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous you might want to take a day trip out to the outlying Sea Islands and visit the Carolina Gullah people.

Have fun! I’m jealous you get to go.

WIL! I loved Charleston when I was there last April for a college buddy’s wedding. It is a beautiful, picturesque town full of really friendly people and wonderful food.

Here’s a site for Charleston tourism: http://www.charlestoncvb.com/

And here’s the thread I started last year around this time, asking for similar advice: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=247108&highlight=charleston

And someone else’s thread that followed:

Have a great trip!

That would be mine. I see Voodoo Lou and I can both recommend suitable footwear. I’ve been thinking about that chicken-lemon-rice soup I had at Old Towne Grill lately but I was thinking it was a potato soup. I have to see if I can find a recipe for that. I wonder if the Charleston paper has one of those food columns where people can write in to request recipes.

As I have said before:

You have to eat a bowl of she-crab soup. It’s the law. Tommy Condon’s is good, so is Sticky Fingers, and Kaminsky’s for dessert.

Take a walking tour of downtown.
