I seem to recall hearing of at least one top Nazi who was caught in South America maybe decades after World War II ended. I seem to recall he was brought to trial despite how much he had aged.
I just checked the obvious Nazi names on Wiki, but Goebles, Gerring, and Himler did not flee to South America. Maybe a SDoper history buff would know what I may be thinking of?
Martin Bormann, one of Hitler’s chief assistants, was killed in Berlin as the Russians took the city at the end of the war. However, his body was not found (or not proven to be him) until the end of the 20th Century, and he was believed to have fled to South America, and to be living, supposedly in secluded luxury there.
While this is not technically an answer to the OP, that erroneous belief contributed greatly to the Nazis-taking-refuge-in-Brazil meme.
Argentina was a fairly popular desitnation, both because of the relative friendliness of the Peron government as well as large German communities in Argentina.
Of course Otto Skorzeny never had to flee anywhere. While investigated as a possible war criminal, he was never indicted. In fact, he escaped custody shortly before the word came down that he was free to go.
Off-topic but the guy who founded the most successful publisher of schoolbooks here, was reputed to have been a nazi, and was named as such by a documentary a few years ago.
Stangl was to me after Eichman, the biggest bona fide criminal who for sure escaped to South America (incl. Mengele in this) & lived in Brazil for nearing 20 years before he was caught by Simon Wiesenthal (& was the biggest 100% for-sure no fooling “get” by the famed Nazi Hunter IMHO).
