We finally finished renovating our basement today. We want to set up a TV area. The walls are 11.5 feet apart. I’d like something that’s nice enough to show DVDs on and invite friends over for the evening without feeling like we should have just gone to a movie theatre.
and: Dell 42" Wide screen plasma enhanced definition TV - Sorry I couldn’t get to the link for this one - I’ll try again later.
I’d be interesested in hearing any experiences anyone has had with this. I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed by all the new definitions and choices out there; I think it was all easier in the old days when all you had to decide was how big and what brand you wanted.
Of course, I’m open to other models besides the ones I’ve noted.
However, because you are in a basement, and the size of the room, you might want to consider this:
These things work best in dark(er) rooms, and your basement sounds ideal for it.
Looks like it is both HDTV and EDTV compatable, so great for live television broadcasts in HD and great for DVD’s.
You first two chices are pretty good. Sony have a great reputation and the Samsungs I’ve seen have a great picture.
The Sony has a built in HD tuner - this is only useful if you use rabbit ears to pick up your regular TV, which I guess is unlikely. It’s also 1080i, which is stunningly good if you ever get a 1080i signal.
The Samsung is 720i - that’s more than enough for DVDs.
The only way to choose between them is to go to the store and look at the picture. Go with the one that you ike the most.
I wouldn’t go with EDTV - it’s OK for watching DVDs, but not good enough to watch HDTV broadcasts on, plus you’re paying a big premium for a flat-panel, when you obviously have room for something a little deeper.
I was in Circuit City drooling over the various models. Rear projection seemed like a nice choice for the price. I liked the Sony model and this LG model the best. Couldn’t talk the wife into it though.
I’ve heard plasma TVs have problems with burn-in. Since there are so many different format ratios out there, that could be serious.
I have a hard time believing that any projection TV wil have the clarity of something where you actually are looking at the pixels. Have you looked at LCDs?
