Jeff Aggoos is fucking brutal on the pitch. [hyperbole]That guy is going to keep us from winning the World Cup!![/hyperbole] Agoos is terrible, he scores own goals, gets beat inside all the time, is giving the ball away without pressure constantly. He is slow and stupid and his mom dresses him funny (I would guess). Why in the world Bruce Arena continues to play this guy is beyond me. Agoos must have some compromising pictures of Arena is all I can figure because there is not other reason Arena would play this “barely good enough to play in the MLs much less the World Cup” piece of crap. I was begining to believe the guys actual first name was “Just bareley getting back (after being horrobly out of position) is” or maybe “The ball is played poorly to the other team by”. ARRGGGGGGHHHH, please stop him before he plays again!
At least this game he didn’t kick the ball in the net himself.
Exactly. What was Arena thinking when he gave old man Agoos yet another chance to f*up. I recall him making some disasterous boners in the 94 cup as well. The whole point of being an experienced defender is not making those kinds of mistakes. He’s got no judgement, he’s not up to it physically, so what’s he good for? Are we really that short of senior defenders that we have to rely on US soccer’s answer to Homer Simpson? Doh!
Friedl’s goalkeeping was golden, maybe the best performance I’ve seen in a cup game, certainly the best in the cup so far. Too bad Agoos had to botch the overall effort.
And the Beasley kid. Great speed, great ball skill, great player for a HS school kid. But he gets flustered… like a HS kid. He has the judgement… of a HS kid. He gets ridden off the ball by the bigger, older Koreans… like a HS kid.
Agoos has been, er, shit. Can’t add much to that.
Got to agree that old Brad Friedel was brilliant between the sticks today. Only saved penalty so far.
Whatever it is with Agoos is probably the same evil voodoo that’s kept Frank “Tosser” Leboeuf in the French squad.
Er, hello? He didn’t even play in the 94 cup.
But yeah, I think it’s time to retire him too. Isn’t Vanney on the squad?
Vanney isn’t in the squad as far as I can tell. According to The Guardian, you have Agoos, Berhalter, Hejduk, Llamosa, Mastroeni, Pope, Regis and Sanneh in defence - although I don’t know if any of their listed midfielders are actually defenders.
I don’t understand why the media, in that quaint way they have, don’t refer to him as Mr Magoo ?..I tell ya, did I ever miss my vocation …
And Beasley has been out of HS for a couple of years now. Doh!
Which earlier game did Agoos screw up so badly? Was it in the '98 cup or one of the 94 qualifiers? At any rate, I remember some serious screwups, overall clumsy play, and nothing that would merit inclusion in the national side.
Vanney was to be the replacement for Armas when Armas went down hurt, only… Vanney went down hurt. As far as I remember, Agoos is still playing because he quarterbacks the defense, so even though he’s about the most useless defensive player, he calls the alignments and runs things, and since we don’t have anyone else who has the experience with this group to do that, he’s in by default. Now, why we don’t have anyone else ready to step in for him is another question entirely… probably it is indeed compromising pictures…
Oh, and Agoos couldn’t have any screwups in previous cups because he hasn’t played in previous cups.
hey, cut him some slack. he was going for the ball, it wasn’t like he meant to put it in the net. Don’t fault a defender for an own goal, because they happen fairly regularly.
And in this case, it would have certainly been a goal had Agoos not touched it.
But yeah, he’s crap.
Agoos plays because, sadly, we really don’t have many better options. I’m not defending Agoos. In fact, it’s physically painful for me to watch him. Any time he tracks back and is facing his own goal there’s no telling what bad decision he’ll make. But who else goes in?
Regis is like a bad Agoos. Berhalter is good, but he can’t distribute very well and he had his share of blunders in qualifying. Llamosa is a good back, but he’s not a center back and we can’t really shift anybody else into center. Our defense is is extremely mediocre. I think the reasoning is that at least Agoos has experience.
I’ve also long believed that Cobi Jones has an extensive dossier on all US coaches. How the hell that guy even gets on the roster is beyond me. He used to be the really fast guy with no ball skills and poor decision making. Now he’s a guy with average speed, no ball skills and poor decision making. I felt like a proud parent when he finally made the breakthrough decision to take the ball to the corner and kill time against Portugal. Prior to that he had given the ball away on several occasions by crossing it directly to the Portugese. Plus, his new hairdo makes his head look like a giant scrotum.
I think Coventry City fans would sympathise with you about Cobi Jones. There used to be an equally bemusing English player called Franz Carr, and it seemed Jones was trying to relive his career. His entire game seemed to involve receiving the ball, running really, really fast and then wondering what to do with it once near the other penalty area.
Well, of course Cobi makes the roster… how can we leave him off? He provides… umm… gimme a minute here… ah! He provides the VOICE OF EXPERIENCE, and he can tell the younger players what it was like when he was an American star! snort
Actually, I have to agree with you; I have no idea why Arena picked him, but then again, I’m not really going to spend too much time questioning the guy, given how things have turned out. Maybe he sees something that we don’t? Maybe he’s a strange man who likes the haircut?
