What was Marvel's universe-reset?

Hey, at least we finally got an origin for wolverine, and the best part? It didn’t conflict with anything. I guess that’s the beauty of never giving the guy a fully told history. Thanks to his healing power, he could basically be any age the writers wanted. Hell, he could have been Jesus Christ for all we know! (it does explain the rising from the dead thing…)

I’m with Max Carnage 100% on the continuity issue. I just like having my heroes never age. C’mon, Fenris, he got bitten by a radioactive spider. You’re concerned about what high school class he graduated in?

Regarding Secret Wars, it wasn’t a response to DC’s books so much as to their toys. Secret Wars was Marvel canon, it did happen, and it did have repercussions in the Marvelverse. But IRL it was an excuse to get all the major heroes together in one storyline so they could put out a set of action figures. DC had just licensed a line of figures (with Mattel I think? Could be totally wrong) called Super Powers. (There are cites for these assertions, some on the SDMB I think)

White Lighting:

I agree with Max too: I don’t care that they’re not aging properly. That doesn’t bother me at all. What bothers me is the constant, ongoing revision of their origins and early stories so you’re never sure what’s going on.

I conceed that (outside of Flash Thompson) Spider-Man’s not too much of a problem…but what about Punisher (who’s gotta be 60-some if he was in Viet Nam for several tours) or Tony Stark (what or The Fantastic Four (why were they going to the moon in such a hurry that they couldn’t shield their ship?)

Hell, what about the Black Widow, noted Soviet spy? Ten years ago there was no Soviet Union any more.

RicWriter came up with some good fixes, but they’ll be obsolete in 10 years too.

Fenris

Kenner did Super Powers, Mattel did Secret Wars. The Super Powers line was far superior, too. Secret Wars had bad sculpts and goofy accessories (“holographic” shields), and Super Powers had figures of characters that wouldn’t be seen again in figure form, at least not until DC Direct.

Anyway, I’m an action figure geek.

Jeebus, now I remember why I have always stuck to stuff like Watchmen, Preacher, and Transmetropolitan.

Thanks for the correction shy guy. Having been at perfect action figure age at the time, I’ll certainly agree with you that the Super Powers figures were cooler. Although the Secret Wars ‘holographic’ shields I always had a soft spot for. The Doom and Spidey figures were cool. I liked how one of Spidey’s feet was angled so when you stood him up he wasn’t just standing in your typical action figure pose.

The Super Powers figures were excellent, though. And since they put out way more of them, there were more obscure characters as you mentioned (Steppenwolf was awesome), although my favorites were always the regular guys. Green Lantern and Flash were cool, although imo they made the Robin figure too skinny. He looked like a little kid, which I mean I guess he was, but the figure never looked like a hero to me.

I always used to take Superman’s cape and put it on Spiderman (backwards, so the “S” didn’t show, of course). I think he still has it on. That’s one of the main things I remember about them. That and the fact that I lost my Green Lantern in the sandbox and had to make my parents buy me another one.

Fenris, I agree with you. If they would just leave all the origins alone it wouldn’t be a problem. Constantly trying to ‘update’ them is lame.

Hey, quick question, which reboot was it that had the Black Knight going to some alternate universe? Was that Heroes Reborn? That was because he felt guilty about having a crush on Crystal, right? Did he ever come back? That was the only time I was ever really into the Avengers, and I always sorta liked that character.

I just remembered another question I wanted to ask, but I’ll take it to the other thread. I’ll leave the Black Knight one in because it’s vaguely on-topic due to having something to do with rebooting. Ironically, the large portion of my post above it is even less on topic, but I’ve got no intention of moving it.

Actually, Fenris, the Black Widow is worse off than you think. There’s a fairly recent (least 5 years or so) miniseries, which I cannot for the life of me rememebr the name of, that claims that she was in WWII alongside Nick Fury, Captain America, etc. She looks pretty hot for an 80 year old, dontcha think?

BTW, your repeated “recommendations” finally convinced me to take a look at Marville. For anyone who’s wondering whether it can really be that bad: it really is that bad. I have to wonder who, exactly, is responsible for letting Bill Jemas delude himself into thinking he’s a writer :dubious: .

I think that was “Avengers: The Crossing”.
