What was the deal with Guster in "Life as a house"?

I was watching the movie Life as a house and was pleasently surprised when it opened with a song from my favorite band Guster. Then I noticed that the name of the family dog was Guster.
And the children were all named after members of the band.
And every song in the movie was by Guster.

So, what was the deal? Was the director just a huge Guster fan?

according to guster’s website back when the movie came out, the writer of the film was a huge guster fan(as everyone should be) and wanted to put the songs in the movie. the band thought this was cool and gave their ok
