What was the first DVD you bought?

Ghost Dog: the Way of the Samurai

The Simpsons: Season 1, since it was a DVD exclusive and had commentaries for each episode.

I used the computer DVD-ROM drive to play it; didn’t get an actual standalone DVD player for another year.

When I finally broke down and got a DVD Player, I bought two DVD’s at the same time:

Def Leppard’s Visualize/Video Archive & Historia/InThe Round & In Your Face

Looking through my collection it reminded me of a dishonorable mention: Batman & Robin came free with my player.

The World is Not Enough…ten years ago, probably to the month.

…WAIT! I’m sorry, on checking my files, it might actually have been Sarah Brightman’s One Night in Eden concert. God, they knew how make 'em back then…two-pieced hinged plastic case, heavy enough to bash someone’s skull with; auto-playing main feature after an intro movie…sniff it makes me a little teary-eyed just thinking about it. Good times.

The first DVD I watched was The Matrix. IIRC, Apple still hadn’t fixed the software drivers on the Apple DVD player, so the sound sync was off.

The first DVD I bought was Goodfellas. I like the movie and there wasn’t too many choices back then. However it was badly dated Single Layer technology- the disc had to be flipped in the middle of the movie. I gave that movie and my DVD player to a friend when I bought my PS3.

I now enjoy Goodfellas in Blu-Ray.

The first DVD I bought was O Brother, Where Art Thou? because I was sure it would continue to be entertaining even after many viewings - and it has been.

I actually bought TWO DVDs as my ‘first ones’…Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Gone with the Wind…now I have WAY too many DVDs…but I guess there are worse things you can do with your money!!!

Same here!

The Lost World

the silent version, in the Eastman House dub. It wasn’t until years later that the 95% complete dub came out, so at the time this was the best version available.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, purchased before I had a DVD player because I was so excited to see it was out on DVD.

Let me see…

First LP: Jethro Tull’s Catfish Rising, actually bought only in the past year or two
First casette: Gifted, one of those Now collections
First CD: Garbage’s Version 2.0
First MP3 or digital album: Something for free with a Coke offer, had a couple of them, all forgotten

First film reel: N/A
First Beta: N/A
First VHS: Tron. Bought it from now defunct UK chain Woolworths, still has the old price sticker on it.
First laserdisc: N/A
First DVD: As above, Men in Black
First BlueRay: Not yet upgraded
First MP4/iTunes movie: Haven’t tried iTunes, too much for free on the BBC iPlayer. I believe I started using it to catch up on the last series of Doctor Who

First LP: Elvis Presley - Elvis’ Golden Records
First cassette: Queen - Live Killers
First VHS - The Breakfast Club
First CD - Husker Du - Flip Your Wig
First DVD - The Last Dragon (man, did that shit not hold up well)
First Blu-Ray - Chungking Express

We bought our first DVD player in 2004. They threw in a free copy of the second LOTR movie, so that one doesn’t count. I’m pretty sure the first DVD we actually bought was Kill Bill.

I think I own maybe 6 DVD’s, and that includes ones that came free with certain artists’ CD releases. The first DVD movie I purchased with intent was Labrynth! My favorite movie ever. Yes, I’m just a big girl.
