Lover of cheese that I am, I have heard Styx’s “Mr. Roboto” more than enough times to make anybody sick. (Nevermind that I first heard it on an MTV “Worst Of” Retrospective.) One factoid I have gleaned is that this was part of some sort of big hideous rock opera.
Being lazy, and not prone to subject myself to too much pain, I’m wondering what the gist of that particular rock opera was. Sure I could buy the album and find out myself, but how crazy do you think I am?
So I’m wondering if any of you who discovered it before it was too late could tell me what they thought.

P.S. Don’t worry, admitting you liked Styx won’t stigmatize you too much. It’ll put you right up there with Adam Sandler!
I LOVE Styx.
“Kilroy Was Here” was a spoof on the then-current Moral Majority phenomenon. Styx had had problems with accusations of backwards messages on their albums, notably on the song “Snowblind”. (For more discussion on this point, see William Poundstone’s Secrets books; this was discussed in Bigger Secrets, I believe). So, they countered with a lengthy video that made light of their persecutors.
Many of the songs have a distinctly anti-censorship bias to them, but that is not surprising, considering the theme of the video.

Included are the liner notes from the album, along with an essay about “Mr. Roboto” that I didn’t really bother to read.
Wow, Cabbage. That is absolutely terrible. That’s the kind of thing that makes you wish you’d remained in ignorance.
Oh well. I guess you get what you ask for.
