My local paper has an announcement on its web site that the USA Weekend weekly magazine was pulled from the Sunday paper because “an offensive word was used in error in an illustration in the issue.”
So now of course I’m terribly curious. What was the word? Did anybody get the “offensive” magazine?
According to Editor and Publisher, the article in question involves storytelling tips. To represent a story in, the designer of the art chose a piece at random from The New York Times Magazine for the background of the artwork. He was unaware the article discussed (and therefore included) the word “nigger.”
The magazine in the Denver Post has the article and the artwork, but the word has been airbrushed out. You’d have to study the art very closely indeed to pick it out, though. The words in the art are not easy to read.
I wondered why my copy of the Cincinnati Enquirer came without the USA Weekend yesterday. I thought it was just a mix-up at the press. Didn’t see anything in the paper indicating that the magazine had been pulled, or why. But I could have missed it.
