What was the (US) Weather like on 31 Dec, 1999?

I am bored. It is Hajj and I am off for two weeks but cannot leave the Kingdom.

When I am bored, I start writing projects I will never finish. This one is about 31 December, 1999 in the US and how things have changed since then. I just know that someplace on the Web must tell me what the US weather was like on that day.

Darn if I can find the information though. Any ideas where to look?

Weather Underground

Type in a zipcode and then use the almanac feature. I think you’ll find this to be satisfactory.

Thank you.

Nope, they do not have weather data for 1999. (I am now working my way up in one-year jumps. No data for 2003 either.)

Old Farmer’s Almanac

If you’re willing to pay a couple of bucks, try http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/ncdc.html

They have full data for zip code 59501 (my hometown) for 31-Dec-1999. Maybe it’s regional?

OK, let my try Manhattan. Zip Code 10001 … Oh yeah, that got it.

A clear cool day in Manhattan. 35 degrees (F) clear with a nice breeze. Low humidity and great visibility.

Thanks again.

Cold in the north. Less cold in the south.

It rained. Somewhere

There was no weather in the US on that date. It had something to do with the Y2K computer bug.

New Jersey had typical winter weather. I remember January 1, 2000 as being warm and foggy.

Slightly overcast and cold in Philly.

People in Saudi Arabia get two weeks off every year for the Hajj?? That’s sweet.

It’s possible I’ve misjudged the merits of living under a religious muslim monarchy.

Also in VT I belive there was a moderate level of snow on the ground, but it wasn’t actively snowing.

I remember it being very comfortable in Burbank, cool and sunny.

And it was cold and raining in Bellingham, WA. Rain let off about 1:30AM (after the new year), and then came back with a vengeance.

But then again, that’s a nice day in Bellingham…

:stuck_out_tongue:

Not if you can’t leave.

I am a teacher, and since the students get two weeks off, so do I. I could leave the kingdom, but it would count as vacation time, so I stay here. Then I take vacation afterwards.

The same deal with Ramadan. I usually get about ten days off, but if I leave the kingdom, it counts against my vacation account.

The price of gas was $1.31 in December 1999, by the way. No ipods, no satellite radio, no hybrid cars. Lots of concern about the Y2K bug, a good stock portfolio would include Polaroid, Eastman Kodak, Enron and Chrysler.

In Chicago, it was clear and cold toward midnight - I just saw our video from that night, as I’m in the middle of copying all our tapes to DVD.

In the media, certainly, but geeks knew it was overblown right from the start. Most computers, especially mission-critical ones, simply don’t need to care what day it is.
