What was this show from?

I once saw a show that I think was part of a series, like Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, or Amazing Stories. It was possible in the 80’s when new.

I don’t remember the title of this episode. It involved an unfortunate young man who’s face and head were vastly malformed, by our human standards. Kind of a pinhead, very dark bruised looking skin, little tuft of hair on the top. He’s very bitter about how folks treat him, due to his looks.

He volunteered to be an ambassador of sorts to a newly encountered alien race, whom we had only contactedby radio. So he’s blasted off. On arrival, after disembarking the ship, a handsome young man meets him and exchanges greetings. This dude also seems bitter, he’s the ambassador the aliens are sending to Earth. Alien dude just says he wants to get away, but “You probably wouldn’t understand” to the young man from Earth.

The guy from Earth passes through a gate to meet the aliens, and, you probably have guessed, they all look like him! Girls are giggling at his good looks, so he turns and calls out to the guy leaving, telling him he’s going to have a good time.

Does this story ring a bell with anyone?

It sounds like a remake of an old Outer Limits plot, so they probably remade it for the new version from 1995. In the old version, the alien was this gorgeous blond, like the daughter in The Munsters.

Sounds a little reminiscent of Twilight Zone’s “Eye of the Beholder”.

Or maybe The Twilight Zone… just checked through all seasons of both on IMDB and didn’t find the old or new version.

I think something like that was in an issue of Weird Science comic. Think you could be misremembering the medium?

I know it was a “Night Gallery”, but I don’t remember the episode title.

“The Different Ones”.

Night Gallery The Different Ones?

Less than an hour and I have the answer. “The Different Ones” it is! God, I love the Dope.

That episode is most memorable for its use of stock footage.
The father is at the window yelling at kids who may as well been in a show on a different channel.
Also scenes from “Fahrenheit 451” and “Silent Running” covered over with some silly patter about how majestic space travel is.

It left me wondering if it was done just because they were being really cheap or as some sort of satire on the genre.

I was also right. There is a version of this called The Ugly One, 4th story in issue 21 of Weird Science.

(Also a somewhat similar one as The Freaks, 2nd story in issue 22 of Weird Fantasy.)

Rod Sterling re-wrote The Eye of the Beholder for Night Gallery, but very poorly executed.

Niece.

And here it is.

They claim it’s not as good as the Twilight Zone episode “Eye of the Beholder,” but that one seems quite obvious to me. They constantly avoid showing anyone’s face. I pegged the twist right away when I first saw it.

I think the comic does the best job with it, switching things on you at the end.
