I’m not spekking it right, but I think it was pronounced “Quix”. I was pretty good at it.
I loved playing Galaga, Tetris, Spy Hunter, and Disks Of Tron.
I totally kicked ass at Elevator Action.

Quix was a similar concept (there were actually a couple other games that used the same “cordon off a box” concept) but it wasn’t the one that Monster was refering to. I used to have it for the Atari 800 XL.
Thanks guys for your help. Qix is the game where you free-form draw your lines.
The paint roller one has pre-defined lines you traced. Does that help any?
Tron was good, but my all time favorite is Discs of Tron. The environmental version just rocks. And the sequel to sinistar, Blasteroids. That was fun.
** Asteroids!!! **
Recently, I found a place with the original arcade machine–sounds, bright white lights, and all. I blew all the money I borught for food on that machine instead.
My favorite was the old Frogger. The second favorite would have to be Q-Bert. I just loved the sound he made when he jumped to a new square.
Two others I forgot to mention: The original Star Wars game (The one with the vector graphics). Hearing Han Solo tell you your proton torpedo shot was “One in a million, kid!”, then watching the Death Star blow up…too damn cool.
Tempest: I can’t believe I forgot to mention this one, esp. since it was already mentioned about three times in this thread! I loved the way Tempest gave you a fireworks display after your game was over; the higher your score, the more elaborate your fireworks show was. Most games, PC, console, or arcade, simply don’t have that much class.
My all-time favorite had to be Crazy Climber. I loved that game. I could kick all my friends patooties at it. My second favorite was Mappy. I also enjoyed Moon Patrol and Time Pilot.
I would also like to say that games from the 80’s kick the ass of today’s games. Today, it’s all about graphics and special moves that you only know by buying cheat books. Back then it was all about GAMEPLAY. Think of the greatest video game of them all, PacMan. It was incredibly simeple in concept, and only one joystick for control! But it ate quarters like crazy.
Galaga
QBert
Tempest
Off topic a bit:
But the best game of all – circa who knows when is the old game of Skee Ball. You can still find Skee Ball at a local arcade that has games from 50+ years ago and of course, Chucky Cheese.
The secret is banking the ball.
Monster,
I think that was Amidar. ( is that what you found? too lazy to follow the link:))
This game called Reactor kicked ass, particularly if the sound was CRANKED! It was like a pulse. I’ve played it on M.A.M.E., but the mouse isn’t as good as a trackball. I love these old games! BLOCKOUT was fantastic. 3D Tetris, and I could play for 1/2 an hour on a quarter. Oddly, I wasn’t that good at Tetris. SIGH Think I’m gonna fire up M.A.M.E. now…
Volfiev (probably misspelled).
Also, Elevator Action.
Xevious, Karate Champ, Ikari Warriors, Gladiator, Gunfight, Frontline, Venture, Phoenix, Some racing game where you ran over zombies, Mousetrap, Dragon’s lair.
Galaga.
But only when I’m at the Union Bar & Grill in Athens, OH, and drunk on Schlitz.
I absolutely despise video games any other way.
Mostly because I’m the only person I know who has never beaten Super Mario Bros.
It’s a bit of sore point.
A few others I remembered from the old days:
Super Konami Basketball
Marble Madness
Zoo Keeper (only saw it in once, you had to wall in a load of zoo animals)
Food Fight (the best!)
I also loved Time Pilot and Phoenix. Wow, this thread really took me back. Thanks!
It had that “Chicken! Come back and fight like a robot!” voice. Very corny yet cool. That game had a built in “cheat diode”. If you were doing to well a bouncing head named “Oscar” would bounce all over the screen until it hit you and wiped you out! Very unfair! Very dismal graphics, yet a very compelling game!
RUNNERS UP
Moon Patrol Only saw this game in one place, the entry way of a Super Value grocery store. I’d actually volunteer to go shopping with my ma just for the chance to play this.
Punch Out (the original, not the Mike Tyson version) This game had personality, with all it’s different characters.
Jokers Wild Pinball best Pinball game of the '80s!
For many years I had the song for Frogger stuck in my head. Its mostly from when my dad was addicted to Q*bert, so he’d sit me on the nearby Frogger tabletop style machine to keep me busy.
We eventually got an Atari and learned the wonders of Space Invaders, Tennis, and so on. And now he wonders why he can never get my brothers and I off the machines…
A buddy of mine and I used to play that domed hockey game (like the one in the beer commercials) every day, every break, every lunch when we both worked in a mall…every day, man…how many hookers could we have bought with those quarters.
A pinball game called Black-Out. And, yeah, Tempest rocked.
There was also this trivia game that another friend of mine and I shorted out. Literally. After playing for an extended period of time, the screen started going haywire and blacking out (I don’t think that was part of the game).
Just to name a few…
