What was your favorite old arcade game?

Gauntlet, Galaga and 1942
God bless MAME. If you haven’t already got it guys then do so and relive our childhoods…

Gorf
Centipede
PacMan
Joust
Space Invaders

Pinball seems to be left out so I nominate Williams “World Cup”. It was pretty much a straight forward pinball game, but when you racked 5x or 10x bonus points, some killer sound effects would kick in.

Video: Asteroids, of course. Also “Wizard of Wor”. It was a space-maze game where you had to finish off varying levels of nasty space-dragons in order to face THE WIZARD OF WOR!! He looked a WHOLE LOT like the emperor in Return of the Jedi when he shot lightning bolts at you. He would appear and disappear at will and could appear right on top of you and you die. My friends and I figured out that, if you worked together and stood back to back, you could get through the game quickly. The Wizard would taunt you in his electronic voice with such things as, “We’re off to see the Wizard, the magical Wizard of Wor” and then laugh at you, “Na Na Na Na”. I saw one of these games on ebay and wished I could afford it. Oh, well.

Perfect topic. Really takes me back.

I loved all of the following, which have already been mentioned:

Tempest
Pac Man
Donkey Kong
Tron
Frogger
Discs of Tron
Joust

But here’s a couple I hope some may recall:

RoadBlasters (anyone remember this one? I was so good at this game it was kinda spooky)

Star Trek (one where you sat down and used armrest controls; the game had vector graphics, awesome sound effects, and was the devourer of many of my nickels at the local Wunderland arcade...but this game is sadly hard to find today)

In downtown Portland, Oregon, there is an arcade that only has arcade games made during the late 70s and early 80s, although I think there's a couple from '87 or '88. I feel like a time traveler every time I go there.

Mr. Do! If I remember correctly, the exclamation point was actually part of the title. I had a ColecoVision, and I loved playing Mr.Do!, although it didn’t look as good as the arcade. They also had a fun game version of the Smurfs, quite cleverly titled “Smurf”. And a PacMan ripoff named Ladybug…Oh, my poor ColecoVision, I miss it so much…

A pinball game called Buckaroo.

Aside: Back then, one game was a dime—three games for a quarter.

Shit, I am old.

Pac-Man
Skee Ball (with those heavy wooden balls–most of 'em are plastic nowadays)

That’s it. I’m a child of the '80s, and I never really played the arcades–my game was (and is) 8-ball pocket billiards.

This might sound kind of bad.

I loved this dorky game called tapper. You poured beer, you tossed it to patrons, they tossed it back. Beautiful simplicity.

Rampage was also really neato spiffy.

Vs. Baseball
Vs. RBI
NBA Jam
Battlezone
Air Hockey

and that old “rod” hockey game (similar to foosball) that you see on commercials nowadays.

I love Galaga. Got it on GameBoy.

And Arkanoid.

And … oooh, this one won’t be popular … Anyone remember ‘Leprechaun Lore’ ? Just a randomly generated forest you ran around trying to get to the pot of gold before the leprechaun got you. So … odd, but a lot of fun.

And Skee-Ball, too.

Pole Position!

I loved Galaga and the part where you get the two ships joined together. Karate Champ was very cool ("Full … POINT!!!), even though any time I attempted a block, it didn’t work and I’d get whomped. There was an old game called “Burger Time,” where you were attacked by walking eggs and other food items that I greatly enjoyed.

Tempest
Stargate
Spyhunter
Smash TV (Remember this one? Destroy everything and win valuable prizes! Like a toaster!)
Rampart (Although, I fear I’m sneaking into the 90’s with that one)

Vanguard
Elevator Action
Spy Hunter
Robotron
Dig Dug
Joust

Looking back, I think I could have mis-spent my youth better.

DRY, the hockey game you mentioned was called Chexx and Super Chexx (contrary top popular belief there was never a version called Rice Chexx). Look around on E-Bay or some of the pinball classifieds, and you might find one for sale (I would love one for my basement/rec room, it would complement the Star Trek:TNG pinball and electronic dartboard nicely).

I was/am a video game junky. The games I loved and played WELL were:
Gyruss (think Galaga in 360 degrees)
Moon Patrol (made it to the end on 1 quarter at a roller rink)
Gorf
Paperboy
Championship Sprint
Dig-Dug
Tapper

The games I loved but played poorly:
Any Pac-Man derivitave (including the pinball/video game hybrid Baby Pac-Man)
Tron
Rygar
Shinobi
Operation Wolf
Crossbow/Cheyenne
Mr. Do

Wow. Suddenly I am back in grade school and hanging out at The Gold Mine in Green Bay, WI. My favorites:[ul][li]Space Wars (I think that was the name) - Same graphics and controls as Asteroids, but it was two-player and you tried to blast your opponent’s ship[/li][li]Solar Quest - Anyone remember this? It was also in the Tempest/Asteroids vein. You blasted emeny ships and then got extra points for picking up the survivors. I ruled at this game.[/li][li]Qix - God, was this addictive.[/li][li]Xevious - My all-time favorite. State of the art graphics at the time. Total adreneline rush when you got to the mother ships and the screen would get filled with a million bombs, lasers, and ships.[/ul][/li]There was one more game I loved, but I can’t remember the name. It was like Xevious, but the view was a three-quarter view of your ship instead of a top-down, and it tried for a 3D sort of look. You had to fly over/under walls and shoot cannons, fuel tanks, etc. The name has totally escaped me. Anyone?

Here are some of my faves:
Frogger
Joust
Omega Race (Anyone remember this one? Similar to Asteroids, but I liked Omega Race better)
Pole Position
Marble Madness
Toobin’

I found out that a local pizza joint has Frogger, Joust, Pole Position, and Toobin’…there goes all my laundry money!

Zaxon?

I actually own a game called Arabian. Oh my goodness, gracious, flaming panties, I love that game so much. But alas, I must sell it. It takes up too much space just sitting in my living room.

(1) Mouse Trap
(2) Mr. Do!
(3) Jumpman Junior
(4) Zaxxon (played on the ColecoVision ADAM!)
(5) Arkanoid (and all of the Breakout clones – there’s a clone for the PC these days called “DX-Ball 2” which I find to be by far the most fun to play; also has a level editor, which is a huge selling point)
(6) Super Mario Bros (the dawn of the Nintendo console era)
(7) Super Mario Bros 3
