I spent so much time at the arcade people wondered how I managed to read as much as I did…
My fave games:
WARLORDS(Loved that game. Would buy a sitdown of it if I could find one)
Rampage(Destroy cities as a large monster)
Gauntlet(Swwet, sweet game)
Captain America and the Avengers
Galaga
You mean there are other people who have heard of Qix!!! No one I know remembers that game! I skipped many-a class to play it. I have only seen it at one arcade, and when it closed…well, I have never seen it since!
I also loved Star Trek (the one with Nomad planting mines in the bonus round), Star Wars and DigDug. I can’t find any of these anywhere!
I get depressed going into arcades today. I have never heard of most of the games, and they are all too complicated, what with all the move buttons and fire buttons and gadgets and what not! Ah, for the simplicity of one joy-stick and one fire button!!! (Damn, am I THAT old???)
I remember when that came out; it was all the rage. I was not good at it.
When Pac Man first came out, I became completely obsessed with it, in a (looking back now) weird way. But my all time favorite is Galaga, although I got pretty good at Galaga 3 when that one came out (but not Galaga 2, go figure).
At home, we had ColecoVision, which was way better than Atari when it came out. It came with Mousecatcher (similar to Pac Man), which became my favorite “home” game to play. I got to where I would just never, ever die. But I could never play the arcade version of that game nearly as well, partly because I had evolved on my own the method of moving the ColecoVision joystick (more like a short nob) with my thumb (before thumb-controlled joysticks came out).
I was travelling in Montana last year, and stopped at a Best Western in the Flathead Indian Reservation. Stepped down the hall to get a Coke, and there, in a little room off to the side, was an ancient Dig Dug machine.
Many hours later, I returned to my room. Oh, the memories.
Have to agree with the posters who found Q*Bert to be the most addictive. I blew many a roll of quarters trying to keep that little bastard alive. (It was something about the sound he made jumping from square to square.)
I blew a lot of quarters on Frogger, too. (I also got my then-girlfriend addicted to this one. I still remember the beatific look on her face the first time she got that damn frog across.) Other faves:[list]
[li]Joust[/li][li]Galaga[/li][li]Kung Fu Fighter- My old roommate and I spent many a drunken hour on this one.[/li]Missile Command
Gazoo - I remember that - “So, a creature for my amusement. Prepare for battle!” - the alien had one wide eye, and the eyeball moved back and forth, right? Space Fury! We loved that game, but it was only in one arcade in town.
monster - I remember a game where you’re a paint roller, called Make Trax; kind of like Pac-Man with a maze, but you painted the street rather than picked up anything. I don’t remember what chased you, but every once in a while a cat or mouse would run around and leave tracks on your paint, which you had to then paint over to finish. I know you found the game you were thinking of but I wonder if you remember this one.
Some of the lesser known games I loved were:
Major Havoc
Frenzy (sequel to Berzerk)(pkbites, that was Evil Otto)
Zoo Keeper (Duke you are the only person I know who’s ever played this one, other than people where I played.)
Burger Time (ditto, Snooooopy)
Astro Blaster
Red Alert (“Red alert! Red alert! Enemy aircraft approaching France! Destroy all bombers by 1100 hours or MIRV will be launched.”)
Zwackery
Bubbles

There is a pizza parlor in Evart,Michigan that has this game, along with Crazy Climber and Asteroids.
My all time favorite is Contra. I spent countless hours playing until I could beat it every time with just one quarter and using just 1 life.
That game was my bitch!
Track & Field! I used to LOVE this game! Pounding the shit out of the buttos - you always knew where in the arcade this game was - and after about 45 minutes of playing it, having my hands cramp up into two claws. Gaddamn that was a fun game.
I even remember playing it’s sequel which featured swimming and if you forgot to breathe every couple of strokes, you would surface, panting.
Gazoo - If I remember right, after you got through a few levels of Space Fury, the voice said “You are starting to annoy me!”
I’ve been trying to think of some more obscure games. I had to consult with my sister, another video game expert: Kick - you control a clown on a unicycle, and have to catch baloons on your head as they float down from the top. If a baloon gets past, you get a chance to kick it up to the top of the screen. Pengo - You are a penguin and you have to kick blocks of ice at your enemies to crush them. Kangaroo - You are a kangaroo and have to climb ladders and punch or kick your enemies, while trying to save your baby. Journey - You are the members of the band Journey. In each level, you are one of the band, and use your instrument to help you get through the level. Bagman - You are in an underground mine and have to find all the bags of gold. Fast Freddie - You’re hang gliding. Carnival - A shooting gallery like at a carnival, with ducks and targets going across the screen. Fast Freddie - You are a lumberjack and have to chop down all the trees. There was a bonus round where you had to stay balanced on a rolling log. I, Robot - Don’t remember much about this one, except you are a robot and have to jump from one platform to another, while an eye watches you.
Pitfall on Atari2600. I played this game for hours on end. It was pretty addictive, really. Also, Joust and Missile Command were pretty good. And the old version of Donkey Kong was the greatest. On Donkey Kong 64, there is a part where you play the old version to get a DK coin. It’s pretty cool.
