Here is a nice way to both date yourself and get labled for your political leanings.
What was your first election? Was it the one immediatly after you came of age? Have you never voted? Was it only when you felt an important election had come about?
The first time I voted was just after I turned 18 in the 2000 primaries. I voted for Alan Keyes. I knew that he would not win but he was the one candidate that most closely matched my views. I am heartened to hear that he will be running for the senate in Illinois now and I hope he wins.
Guess I’ll be the first of the old fart dopers checking in.
My first vote was for President waaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1972. It was the first election I was eligible to vote in having turned 18 in July of '72. The very next year I had a bumper sticker that said “Don’t Blame Me. I Voted For McGovern.”
Ok, all you Amurrkin kiddies, time for the day’s gummint lesson. Who was the other candidate for President in the 1972 election?
In 2000, about a month after I turned 18, I voted for Bush/Cheney in Ohio. Bush had one of the most decisive victories in Ohio compared to the rest of the states that year. Although Ohio is going to be the next Florida this year, from the looks of things.
(He was running on the “Consumer” ticket, I could not in good conscience vote for either Bush or Dukakis, and I figured the poor guy had suffered enough.)
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Folks we have a winner! Of course you win absolutely nothing but you can take pride in knowing your Amurrkin gummint/history Ghanima.

My first eligible election was the California gubernatorial primary of 1982. I know that Tom Bradley won (the Democratic Primary), but I don’t remember who else won, and I can’t recall whether I voted for him (but I think I did). Bradley was defeated in the general election by George “Duke” Deukmejian, affectionately known as “Adolf” to his opponents. Jerry Brown was nominated for the U.S. Senate (defeated by Pete Wilson), and there was the usual slew of propositions, and initiatives.
My first Presidential election was in 1984, and I voted for Jesse Jackson in the Democratic primary (Gary Hart won in California, and Mondale won the nomination). I voted for Mondale in November (he got humiliated by Reagan).
Me too. And it was the last time I was happy about the outcome of the election (though I did vote for Slick Willy in '92, for lack of a better choice).
