What was your first election, who did you first vote for?

Here is a nice way to both date yourself and get labled for your political leanings.

What was your first election? Was it the one immediatly after you came of age? Have you never voted? Was it only when you felt an important election had come about?

The first time I voted was just after I turned 18 in the 2000 primaries. I voted for Alan Keyes. I knew that he would not win but he was the one candidate that most closely matched my views. I am heartened to hear that he will be running for the senate in Illinois now and I hope he wins.

1980, Ronald Reagan. I found that choice relatively easy to make.

First one I was eligible for, the 2003 California Recall election.

I voted for the recall, and _________ for Governor.

(Was going to vote for Ueberroth, but he dropped out.)

1984 When I turned 18. I voted for Mondale and I also found it to be an easy choice.

Guess I’ll be the first of the old fart dopers checking in.

My first vote was for President waaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1972. It was the first election I was eligible to vote in having turned 18 in July of '72. The very next year I had a bumper sticker that said “Don’t Blame Me. I Voted For McGovern.”

Ok, all you Amurrkin kiddies, time for the day’s gummint lesson. Who was the other candidate for President in the 1972 election?

In 2000, about a month after I turned 18, I voted for Bush/Cheney in Ohio. Bush had one of the most decisive victories in Ohio compared to the rest of the states that year. Although Ohio is going to be the next Florida this year, from the looks of things.

Anderson?

I voted for Reagan in 1980, because Carter made me register for the draft.

Clinton, take one. My 18th birthday was on October 1st, so I barely squeaked into the voting booth.

It was 1988, and I voted for… Eugene McCarthy!

(He was running on the “Consumer” ticket, I could not in good conscience vote for either Bush or Dukakis, and I figured the poor guy had suffered enough.)

2000, Gore. I turned 18 just after Clinton’s second victory.

Jimmy Carter, I think it was the right choice.

  1. Six months after I turned 18. Voted for Clinton.

Nixon? And he won, but then resigned in 1974 due to the Watergate scandal that would have gotten him impeached.

Do I win?

1976, Jimmy Carter. A good man plagued by bad luck. I’ld vote for him again if I could.

Nixon. (Is this a trick question? I looked it up and see at least two other candidates besides Nixon and McGovern.)

1988, Dukakis.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Folks we have a winner! Of course you win absolutely nothing but you can take pride in knowing your Amurrkin gummint/history Ghanima.

**Did I say anything about there being a prize?

My first eligible election was the California gubernatorial primary of 1982. I know that Tom Bradley won (the Democratic Primary), but I don’t remember who else won, and I can’t recall whether I voted for him (but I think I did). Bradley was defeated in the general election by George “Duke” Deukmejian, affectionately known as “Adolf” to his opponents. Jerry Brown was nominated for the U.S. Senate (defeated by Pete Wilson), and there was the usual slew of propositions, and initiatives.

My first Presidential election was in 1984, and I voted for Jesse Jackson in the Democratic primary (Gary Hart won in California, and Mondale won the nomination). I voted for Mondale in November (he got humiliated by Reagan).

All I’m gonna say is that in my very first election, I cancelled out **swampbear’s ** vote!

And next year you didn’t get to have one of those cool bumper stickers. So There! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ferret Herder there were two other candidates in 1972 but I was going for the big two.

Maybe I won’t repeat this post twice. :smack:

Me too. And it was the last time I was happy about the outcome of the election (though I did vote for Slick Willy in '92, for lack of a better choice).
