Hey! My grade school was the Krusaders! Yes, spelled with a freaking-K to match the name of the school. Keller Krusaders. Kill me now. (Interesting going to Helen Keller Elementary School - we always got first row tickets on field trips, because everyone we booked with thought we were all disabled. We weren’t.)
High school was…the Thunderbolts. Often shortened to T-bolts.
Now, think about it…WTF does a Thunderbolt look like? Lightening bolt, sure (and in fact, that’s what the mascot’s costume was) but a Thunderbolt? Thunder is sound, you ninnies!
Also unmolseted by PC-ers, so far as I know. The drill team did this cool routine with an arrow where they break it at the end. If they ever have to change the mascot they’d probably change it to “Arrowheads” or something just so they could keep that routine!
The other school in town was the Highland Rams. They had a shout that went “When you say Ram Power / You said it all!” So of course we’d holler “When you say Ram Power / You ain’t said sh!t!” Totally frowned upon by the admin. So someone comes up with the idea that “kiwa” is a Shoshoni word for “sh!t” so we can all substitute “You said kiwa!” I doubt it actually means that, but we used it for years.
I’m surprised there haven’t been more Wildcats. Both my girlfriend and I were 'cats, albeit several hundred miles and several years apart. I always thought it was a pretty common mascot, but it seems like only CynicalGabe shares it.
Yup. The Charles Page High School Sandites. And our mascot was a minuteman, which has nothing to do with sandites, which are a type of flea. Although I doubt whoever decided to call us “Sandites” knew that.
Well, Tulsa. I went to Washington. I remember one year we played you guys for homecoming, and there were a lot of door decorations that said things like “Stomp the Sandites”. None of us knew what a “sandite” was, exactly.
High school - the Patriots. At least it made sense for us - being in Massachusetts and all.
First college - the Lancers. I have no clue what a Lancer is. I didn’t stay long enough to find out what the mascot actually looked like.
Current college - the Wildcats.
By the way WVmom , Mogehan Sun the casino was created by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut. So, apparently, they are real - just slightly more north.
That wouldn’t be good ol’ T.F. South, would it? If so, they’ve kept the Rebels and ditched the flag. I don’t know what happened to Johnny Reb.
Oh, and I was a Blue Devil in high school, Red Devil in junior high. The high school colors used to be royal blue and white, but somewhere in the last few years somebody decided to add gold. Apparently that nice crisp blue and white combination wasn’t flashy enough or something. Oh, well.
My kids were Blazers in jumior high. Apparently not everybody paid attention, because once when we were going to order “Spirit Wear” (t shirts and such) one of the parents asked what logo we were putting on them, a sport jacket? Hey, you see that pennant on the wall? The one with the lightning bolt? Yeah, the same lightning bolt that’s on everything the school does.
Nope, I went to Southside in Fort Smith, AR. I see they are still the Rebels, but again, don’t know if they ditched the flag, Johnny Reb, and playing Dixie at pep rallies. And school colors were light blue and red, you would have thought there would have been grey in there somewhere. Go figure.
I went to South High- Home of the South High Rebels- Home of the Rebels. Long ago, the Confed. battle flag was all over; they had a huge flag that covered the entire foot ball field, the band and color guard (the Rebelettes) both wore confederate uniforms, and the color guard carried Confed. Battle flags. Of course, that’s “bad” and we can’t do it anymore.
Our mascot was (and still is) Johnny Rebel, but Johnny isn’t allowed to wear any kind of costume associating him with the Confederacy. Oh no. Johnny can’t even wear pins on his collar that MIGHT resemble a uniform. Now, the principal wonders why there is no school spirit; hmm…maybe because we have no identifiable mascot?
Oh, they did discuss changing it: The South High Shields! Woo. See, South’s Rival is North (a given, yes). North used to be “The North High Yankees”. Now they are" The North High Stars".
