What will be the next taboo word?

Related to this thread.

We already have some “words”: the f-word, the s-word, the n-word, the c-word.

So what do you think will be the next word to be exiled from the language?

Semprini?

I think it works the other way around, no? Most words are excluded and then included, not the other way around. Nigger probably being the exception.

I think it’s only a matter of time until “faggot” becomes the next “nigger”. Gay folks (and their non-gay very close friends) will be able to use it, but anyone not inside the group saying it will get shouted down quickly.

Similar to how “The N Word” has become more stigmatized as time goes by, I would expect that the next taboo will be some word for a group of people that is currently on a trend towards greater general social acceptance.
My own guess would be that the next taboo will be rude names for gay people or fat people (and that was even before I saw the post above this one that was posted while I was writing this :stuck_out_tongue: )

I think part of the reason “nigger” is such a taboo word is there’s actually a tangible fear of being assaulted by black men for using that word. I can recall many times when I’ve heard someone admonish someone else who used that word, to the effect of “they’ll kick your ass if you ever said that to their face,” or some other such thing. “Yeah, try saying that around (whoever) and you’ll be a fucking dead man.” I mean, back in high school, that word got thrown around quite a bit by drunk, macho white guys - when they were amongst themselves. But there was always a sort of understanding that if anyone was to ever say that word in the presence of an actual black guy (or worse, multiple black guys) they would immediately be descended upon with the force of a billion nuclear warheads, be torn limb from limb, decapitated, castrated, eviscerated, or otherwise fucked up by the angry blacks, who would be presumably stirred to a murderous rage by the use of that hated word.

There’s no equivalent to this for gays, really. All throughout my four years of high school, the word “faggot” was practically used in every sentence. Yes, even by me. (People can change, by the way.) Maybe this was because I was part of the “jock” crowd, but the point is nobody was afraid of gay people. Nobody was afraid that some gay guy was going to beat them up for saying “faggot.” It was universally a term that signified weakness, effeminacy, and a total lack of any kind of physical threat. Nobody would have ever conceived of using the word “nigger” in gym class because if you did that, you’d get your ass kicked.

Black men are, for better or for worse, stereotyped in American culture as being masculine, aggressive, and easily provoked to violence. As long as this image remains, people will rarely use the “n-word” in public.

I think this is already the case in many places. I certainly wouldn’t use the word, and I don’t know anyone who would except for some gay friends. If someone used the word faggot, I can’t imagine them not being told it was inappropriate.

I think in my life time, people will stop using the term white-trash freely.

meh, i call one of my best friends ever Faggot, and he calls me Breeder =)

of course I have known him for something like 35 years …

The problem with banning “faggot” from the language is that we already have an “f-word”. What would we use? The other f-word? The f-word that ends with a t? F-word v2? The word that dares not speak its name?

The pink word?
