We will go to war against terrorists. They will fight back, as they have promised. What will be their weapons of choice?
Do you believe there are Muslim extremists in the U.S. right now with biological and/or chemical weapons? Perhaps they’ve been secretly stockpiling for years in preparation for something like this.
This is what concerns me more than anything.
Here is my gloom-n-doom prediction: After war breaks out, Muslim extremists who have secretly resided in the U.S. for years will put their weapons to “good use”:
They’ll let off their biological weapons in major metropolitan areas.
They’ll contaminate water supplies with ultra-deadly viruses.
They’ll let-off chemical bombs in churches and shopping centers.
They’ll contaminate the food supply.
And so on.
Perhaps this is not a good time to be living in the city (??).
So are my fears rational? Or am I suffering from delusional paranoia?
Considering how recent events show a blatant disregard for human life by these parties. I think that if they had these horrible weapons they would have used them by now. Why go to all the trouble of hijacking four airliners when you have your own weapon of mass destruction sitting in your closet.
The weapons of choice will be those that they have used to date: fear, ignorance, intelligence, coercion. We can all do something about the first two, and this should be a good place to start.
They could go with this, or they could go with that, they could go with this or they could go with that…
or hire Christopher Walken to entrance us with hypnotically creepy dance routines…
Biological and chemical warfare isn’t as easy as it may appear, although it’s a realistic threat. From stories, I’ve read, even the US and Russia have had very hard times figuring out how to disperse biological weapons effectively.
I’d still worry more about another outbreak of a deadly flu virus such as in 1919. That was pretty bad also. Or try not to contract AIDS.
And don’t forget that supposedly “nonextremist” governments like the US and Russia have had the ability to vaporize all life on the planet since the 1950s.
I think another tatic will be trying to show the world images of pitiful innocent civilians killed by the US or peaceful harmless places that certainly not terrorist training camps but we mean devils blew up anyway.
Personally, I have more economic and enviromental worries.
If there is a campaign of some sort in Afghanistan, I fear the fundies going after supertankers. I can forsee them having to be escorted by destroyers. If that becomes a credible threat, I dare to think what that will do to the price of oil… and the rest of North Americas economy along with it.
I also think there may be a chance of them going after North Americas gas and electricity infrastructure. Pipelines go for litterally thousands of miles of “unpopulated” wilderness. Easy game for a few home-made explosives. The same thing for power transmission lines.
I am not “scared” nor do I think “paranoid”, but I believe they are really possible targets that should be at least evaluated by the powers at be… if they are not already.
My concerns are also for more of a “grass-roots” terrorist campaign, rather than a large-scale coordinated attack like last Tuesday’s. And in the inimitable way of government, we are sure to concentrate all of our efforts against the prevention of that which has already happened. I see drop-off bombs and nuisance attacks against infrastructure: public transportation, roads, bridges, power and gas. The possible target of supertankers hadn’t occurred to me but it seems viable and frightening.
I think the most destructive possibility in terms of a realistic threat is electronic assaults- cracking and our centers of commerce or our banking system- I am still waiting for the first majorly destructive crack of an electronic trading system (NYSE or NASDAQ for example). These guys have tumbled to the fact that the long term ripple effects can be as destructive as the initial shock and loss of life.
