I imagined them much like ringwraiths. I mean, they are much like ringwraiths. Either from the shared heritage of fantasy, or from ‘OK, how do I invent some really scary mfs’
The main difference is that the dementors have bodies. Showing some decayed flesh should give them a different ick factor.
That’s amazing. I’ve read the series twice and somehow never thought of them as “ghostly white”. It’s amazing what you can miss, even on multiple readings. I always pictured them much like the Ringwraiths too.
I don’t know where the “ghostly white” comes from at all. Are you sure you are not confusing it with HPs protection spell, Patronus? There is one point in the books where they are described as having hands that are “glistening, grayish, slimy-looking, and scabbed”. I must go grab the books and see if any mention is made of their attire (which I assume to be robish, considering they draw down their hoods to “kiss”). My own image of them is incredibly ringwraithish, which is what prompted the question, as I can see the director wanting very much to avoid this.
“the hand was suddenly withdrawn into the folds of its black material” … ok black cloaks then. Later on when they are at the match, “gliding in a black mass around the lake towards them”.
Don’t think they ever stated a height…of course, my copy of the 3rd book is currently not here, so I’m relying on The Harry Potter Lexicon. I’m quite sure they would put the height if it were mentioned.
Anyway, a friend of mine is taking bets on how similar they are to Ringwraiths. I agree wholeheartedly with her…though I see the Dementors as being thinner and perhaps a bit taller than I remember the Ringwraiths as. But really, how much variety can you get when it comes to tall, dark, hooded creatures?
