What will the Washington Football Team's new name be on 2 February 2022?

Then repeat to yourself ‘It’s just a show, I should really just relax!’

Don’t you MST3K me! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

It would be the most Dan Snyder thing ever if they came out tomorrow to reveal the new name is:

The Washington Redskins

Maybe Red Skins.

Change the logo to this:

Another thing occurred to me… Tomorrow is Groundhog Day.

If Snyder sees his shadow, will he delay the team’s new name for 6 more weeks?

Is it just coincidence that Tom Brady officially announced his retirement today, meaning Tampa Bay no longer has any claim on his name?

The Washington Bradys
The Washington Tom
The Washington GOATs

There’s a mascot for you.

News helicopters have spotted a “Washington Commanders” banner hanging at FedEx Field. It appears that the new name may have leaked.

Here is the image:

Some suggest that it’s part of a misinformation campaign before they reveal the REAL name, but I’ll take Occam’s Razor and say it’s probably going to be the name. I assume they didn’t expect someone would be able to see into there, nobody thinks of the helicopters!

“Commanders” is not the worst name that was suggested but it’s extremely generic. And sports writers can easily come up with puns and other zingers from it, so they’ll like it.

New QB of the Commanders Lacks Command

Commander Chameleons: Washington Team Lacks Identity

The HC can have the nickname “Commandant”. And of course, the inevitable “Commie” slur.

Maybe I’m being particularly dense, but I’m not sure what I missed. What does Commanders have to do with communism? Is it just a matter of the word looking a little similar to comrade? AFAIK commander wasn’t a rank that was particularly associated with Soviet military forces.

It’s just a shortened and diminutive form of the word like Thomas is Tommie.

“Commie” is literally short for “Commander”. It’s an abbreviation.

Just as “commie” is taking the first four letters of “communist” and making a diminutive out of it, you can do the same with “commander”. And in doing so, link the two for derogatory purposes.

And when they have a mediocre season they can call nickname them the Commoners. And since they are out in Largo at the end of two Metro lines, the Commuters.

I’m trying to decide which name is more pathetic. The Guardians or the Commanders.

Just one man’s opinion, but I’d say the Guardians is pretty lame. The Commanders would be a solid mediocre.

Maybe it’s a fake one and the real banner is behind it. Frankly, Football Team is better than Commanders. Fans will dress in Handmaid’s Tale gear.

Nah. Guardians at least has local lore behind it.

Agreed, I’m not aware of a “Commander” landmark in DC (maybe there is one).

Joe Theismann implied the name would be Commanders, but then backpedaled.

Guardians has lore, but “We have a three-game series against the Guardians next week” doesn’t seem like anything to be too terribly concerned about.
