Well, we will believe what you want to, all of us.
What you seem to be saying is there is chaos at the micro level that produces order at the macro level. Never known that to be logical before. More likely we can’t understand the micro level as well as we can the macro, and it only appears that way. As for being unrelated mentally you are correct. Not necessary to do a lot of research to find evidence either. Just go ask the mother of identical twins or other multiples. These babies have only their mother in common when it comes to attitudes, preferences, behaviour, etc.

Maybe if you understood the difference between ‘chaos’ and ‘probability’, you wouldn’t have posted this. Perhaps, also, if you understood how probabilities can cancel out, this can produce predictability at the macro level. But, as has been long-established, if you understood anything at all about science, your posts in GD would be radically different.

No I’m guessing that a loving god would move us to become more loving even if it took generation upon generation to move forward, while an unjust god while occasionally allowing a glimmer of hope for entertainments sake, would be going against his very nature to allow slow continued progress which results in more people living better lives.
You’re presuming that the better lives lived on earth are long enough to be a blip on his radar - perhaps to him they’re just long enough to tease us.

For the rest of the week, I shall refer to you as ‘Snarky McSnarkerson, lord of the riposte.’ Here is your sword.
Lately, I really have been making a conscious effort to control my temper on the SDMB. But **lekatt ** brings out the worst in me.

Soph-- I mean, Lord McSnarkerson – I think you mistook my applause for criticism. I was in the midst of composing a reply to lekatt when I read yours and was silenced by its wonderfulitude.
For future reference; when somebody GIVES you a sword, it’s a mark of favor.

The body you inhabit is not the real you, you were not created at birth. I know this means nothing to you now, but you are young. The older one gets the more they venture out of their comfort zones to learn about the world outside of the closed belief systems of their youth.
I’m sorry, but you cannot invoke science and then post something like this. The body you inhabit is absolutely the “real you.” The chemical makeup and electrical impulses in your brain determine reaction, mood, consciousness; all the way down to my preferring sashimi over maki and the smell of lilac causing me to remember my first cat. It’s all brain chemistry and has nothing to do with “belief.” Well. I take that back. it even influences spirituality.

Um… why are you using facts in a discussion with lekatt?

The reason I used the word chaos was because he used the word chaos.

Yes, but he is using the term correctly–to refer to the vast complexity of macro systems which makes them very sensitive to small changes in inputs, and therefore makes it very difficult to predict their behavior. When he is talking about the subatomic level, he uses the word ‘probabilistic’. Try reading his post more carefully. And try learning some science.

We have evidence that the “mind” spirit lives beyond the death of the brain, would you like a pound or two.

Because, dammit, they’re supposed to work! I mean, honestly. Someone posts something reasonable about science and determinism, you don’t expect that person to then turn around and completely discard the remaining facts because they find them distasteful. Or am I being naive, here?

Some people cherry-pick their religious texts. Some people cherry-pick reality. That’s just the way things are.
(Actually, I’d say that everyone cherry-picks reality to one degree or another; nobody takes everything into account. It’s just some people cherry-pick it with an agenda.)
Well, sure. Everyone has filters. But most people when presented with facts simply say “Oh. I didn’t know that. Thank you for the information.” And then move on, and either process that information or don’t. They don’t then go on to assert scientific proof of the “spiritual mind” living on after brain death! If you dream that you’re floating over your body and “seeing” the doctors applying paddles, then that’s just your mind playing funny buggers with you! It isn’t real.
But I feel I’m continuing a massive hijack of a plane already determined to crash and burn. I’m going back to talking with cosmodan
I would say that in seeking “justice,” more often than not many seem to be seeking revenge, which, IMO, seems to be an evolutionary trait. As for love…my previous statement stands. Pheromones and brain chemistry have more to do with it than actual conscious choice.

The only reason I asserted it, is because it’s true. There has been a lot of research lately and most people just don’t keep up with it.
Here is a story I found in the news today.
