What would be the word meaning ...

of or pertaining to the soul

I wanted to use such a word in a sentance and I actually said ‘soulular’ like cellular.

Mr. Hoping to expand his vocabulary by another word, Jinxie

What was the sentence? Soulular is a perfectly horrid word IMNSHO.

All I can find in various thesaurus is soulful which I doubt is quite what you are after. Epheremal? Christ, now that looks wrong.

Do you own a thesaurus? If you don’t, go and buy yourself one! They’re not hard to find secondhand. However in this case I think you are SOL. I own four and not one of them has a useful adjective which relates to ‘soulular’ ::shudders daintily::

Soul-like? Soul-esque? Ego? Id?

Please reproduce the sentence you spoke, as early as you can remember it.

Well, there’s spiritual; synonyms at immaterial:

There’s also numinous, and perhaps otherworldly or supernatural.

Pneumatic has a now uncommon meaning of “spiritual” or having to do with the soul or spirit. In the most technical sense, this may actually be your best bet, but practically everyone will look at you funny if you use it that way. (Pneumatology is the branch of theology dealing with the soul or spirits.) Psychic means having to do with the mind, often in a rather woo-woo sense.

Thesaurus should only be helpful if soulular was a real word. Which I agree is an absolutely terrible word. Sadly I have no idea what or where I said it so truck was I by the aweefulness of what I had just said.

Thank you for all the suggestions

Ephemeral isn’t quite right.

I guess spiritual would be right as I have it defined as “of, concerned with, or affecting the soul” but this dictionary is from 1971 and spiritual seems a little too broad for me. But I guess that’s more due to my personal definition of that word, which I guess I have to change now.

numinious is close, but it’s “or of pertaining to the numen”

pneumatic, lol, here’s 1 of the definitions in my dictionary “having or pertaining to an ample bust”, although I guess it’s definition you were referring to is one that I could use, although you’re right, no one will know what I’m trying to say.

soooo. You’ve given me some good words, but they just don’t feel right. But what’s worse I know they’re right. spiritual, thank you.

oh, one more funny thing from my dictionary

soul sister - a fellow Negro of the female sex
it’s opposite is also there.

How about Soulful?

Jinxie!

a damned thesaurus would help you even when you are struggling. There’s lists of words including adjectives which stem from the noun. They’re cool.

Anyone who could even conceive of the abomination that is soulular needs one. And a style guide. And Fowler…

Looking at the etymological development of the word “soul,” I think “soulear” (soul-e-ar) is the word you are seeking. Odd we have to coin a word for this, isn’t it?

According to the OED, here are three possible words:

[ul][li]soular: “of or pertaining to the soul”[/li][li]souly: “of or pertaining to the soul”[/li]soulish: “of or pertaining to, characterized or distinguished by, the soul, esp. in its lower or less spiritual aspects.”[/ul]

lol… all of a sudden soulular isn’t looking so bad

wow, soular?
Thanks JeffB, OED huh? Well I guess it had to be in that, what? 33 volumes each weighing about 20 pounds each. The first two are also neat homophones. Well now I guess I’m ready next time it comes to the point where I need to use that word again.

The Jinxed one

I wish I did have the full print edition (only 20 volumes), but it’s out of my price range for a dictionary ($995 US). Fortunately, I have access to the OED on-line version through work.
