The Royal Guardsmen
I have a great mix that I’ve been listening to all day today. It’s my absolute favorite and the one I listen to every year. It has several of the songs already mentioned.
On it:
Suzy Snowflake - Soul Coughing
Oi to the World - The Vandals
Christmas at the Zoo - The Flaming Lips
I’m a Lonely Jew - Kyle Broslofski (South Park)
Santa’s Beard - TMBG
Carolina Christmas - Squirrel Nut Zippers
God Rest Ye Jerry Mentleman - Bad Religion
Christmas Sucks - Tom Waits and Peter Murphy
Christmas Wish - Steve Martin
Little Dummer Boy - Dandy Warhols
The Christmas Song - The Arrogant Worms
Careless Santa - Mono Puff
Christmas at Ground Zero - Weird Al Yankovic
Mr. Grinch - Whirling Dervishes
Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight) - 2 versions - The Ramones and Joey Ramone solo
Christmas in Hollis - Run DMC
Oh Tannenbaum - TMBG
Christmas Vacation - Descendents
Hanukkah Under the Stars - Fountains of Wayne
Santa Claus is Smoking Reefers - Squirrel Nut Zippers
Jingle Bells - The Simpsons
Frosty the Snowman - Cocteau Twins
Joy to the World - Bad Religion
O Holy Night - Eric Cartman (South Park)
The Night Santa Went Crazy - Weird Al Yankovic
Akahana No Tonakai - Sailor Moon
Little Drum Machine Boy - Beck
We Just Go Nuts at Christmas Time - TMBG
Silent Night - Bad Religion
Feast of Lights - TMBG
Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Bruce Springsteen
25th December - Everything But The Girl
Christmas - Blues Traveler
Merry Christmas (Baby PLease Come Home) - Joey Ramone
Fairytale of New York - The Pogues
Merry Christmas Baby - Bruce Springsteen
Winter Wonderland - Cocteau Twins
Merry Christmas From the Family - Jill Sobule
Xmas Time (It Sure Doesn’t Feel Like It) - Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Donna and Blitzen - Badly Drawn Boy
And it’s got some songs from TV specials like Rudolph and Frosty, and a bunch of Vince Guaraldi.
I’ll definitely need to add some of these now.
Well, as someone who is usually beaten to the punch, and as such can perfectly understand your feelings, let me just say, “nyah!”
The whole of A Santa Cause
The Arrogant Worms - Christmas is Almost Here
The Irish Rovers - Merry Bloody Xmas
Is that the one with Kirsty McColl?
Of all the versions of “Santa Baby,” my favorite is Maria Muldaur’s
I’ve never heard that one. I’m going to have to look for it. I love Eartha Kitt’s original, hate Madonna’s Boopified version, and claw the earphones out when Kylie Minogue’s giggly air-headed version comes on. Will I like Maria’s? (I’m a big “Midnight at the Oasis” fan…)
**Mary Margaret O'Hara** *White Christmas*
**Danielle Dax** *Blue Christmas*
**Kate Bush** *December Will Be Magic Again*
**PeeWee Herman** *Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer*
**The Youngsters** *Christmas In Jail*
**Johnny And John** *Christmas In Viet Nam*
**Gracie Fields** *The Fairy on the Christmas Tree *
**Fats Waller ** *Swingin' Them Jingle Bells *
**Phyllis Robins** *The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot *
**Connie Boswell** *Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow*
**Holly Cole** *Deck the Halls*
**James Brown** *Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto*
**James Brown** *Please Come Home for Christmas*
**Eartha Kitt** *Santa Baby*
**Dean Martin** *Baby It's Cold Outside*
**Michael Jackson** *I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus*
Eartha Kitt’s will always be definitive, but Holly Cole’s is good too.
Christmas would not be complete in the Valley household without Oh Holy Night by Eric Cartman (especially in video form).
Yes.
Jethro Tull- “Christmas Song”, “Another Christmas Song”, and anything else from their Christmas Album
Actually, that wasn’t Karloff singing, that was Thurl Ravenscroft (voice of Tony the Tiger).
There are three entire CD’s that are ecclectic enough to for me to listen to without a glurge-attack:
Boogie Woogie Christmas Brian Setzer Orchestra (rockin’!)
Bright Day Star The Baltimore Consort (medieval, on authentic instruments)
Comfort & Joy Rockapella (the original songs are great!)
FTR, I absolutely despise Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.
(where’s a Santa-hat smilie when I need one?)
Not one thought of “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” by Elmo and Patsy? That was worth each and every one of the 99 pennies I threw overboard to download this.
“2000 Miles” by The Pretenders.
“Baba Yetu” from the Civ IV soundtrack is also on my Xmas playlist. Seems weirdly appropriate (well, it is the Lord’s Prayer…).
And thanks for the hedz-up on the Jethro Tull Christmas album, duality72.
Here are some of the cds I have on during the holidays…
A John Waters Christmas - various artists
Do you hear what we hear - Kiki & Herb
A Christmas Together - John Denver and the Muppets
Martinis and Mistletoe - The Yuletide Lounge Band
Neko Case’s cover of Tom Waits’ song “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis.”
