What would cause this particular type of spam?

I have a Pit thread about this where I am far angrier, but my question is:

Why does a seemingly reputable company, such as AOL/Time Warner send me, at this count, 25 identical solicitations to receive a daily e-mail digest of stories from the Sports Illustrated website.

I know that I had given them my e-mail address once, most likely for a contest of some sort, but why would a company engender so much enmity by cranking out one message over and over and over and over again?

i dunno about your specific circumstance, but i do know that i have received emails from hackers who spam me with email from reputable sources. another words, they send out email with return address as a big name firm. in this case aol, but in reality, aol did not send the email out.

they are not doing it for profit as the links actually link to the firm and not to a spoof or spam site.

This e-mail was from AOL/Time Warner and after a threatening e-mail and an angry phone call, I am off their list off of all promotions.

Or so they say.
