I’m not suggesting that she would. I’m just wondering. I chose her because she seems to have a lot of Hollywood clout (and I’m sure a lot of people would like to watch her do the nasty), and she seems to be an actress who is largely considered to be more-or-less sane and respectable.
Would taking a facial from Peter North deep-six her career? Would it affect her career at all?

I have no relevant expertise (either in film business or consumer cultural studies) so I’m just shooting my mouth off here, but it seems to me that, beneath the prudery and misogyny, the real reason that acting in porn tends to represent end of career is that they are overwhelmingly bad movies as movies, with no acting and no real roles to act in to speak of anyhow.
Now, if she were to act in a porn movie that actually had, you know, acting, and a plot, and true characters, then no, I don’t think it would ruin her career or anything.
Suppose, for instance, she had worked with that Kubrick fellow back when he was playing around with the idea of producing one called IIRC “Eyes Wide Shut”?
I’ve never heard of someone of her stature going and doing a porno. I’ve heard of them being career killers, as in people who are involved in it are shut out of the mainstream film industry.
I don’t know what that means. I didn’t see the movie (though I have seen the photo of her butt) but AFAIK it wan’t a porno.

ITA. But I have been told (by both male and female likers of porn) that porn isn’t about plot, it’s about people fucking. So, I suppose that those of us who would like a bit more drama and character developement with our titillation are in for a wait.
I would prefer porn (I dislike it) with some decent acting, plot and character engagement (besides the obvious). Nicole would be good at porn, IMO.

What’s got me curious is that it seems to be a roadblock to to people who want to go from obscurity to fame (a friend works as a production person in television, he told me that even being a lighting guy on a porn set will get you blackballed), but what do you (“you” as in, “all the Dopers out there”) think would happen if someone on top (no pun) up and did a hard-core porno? (I picked Kidman more-or-less arbitrarily, as mentioned in the OP.)

Look at her imdb entry. She’s been getting new parts consistently for years, which is more than you can say for the vast majority of Hollywood actresses.
A fair amount of Hollywood product isn’t about plot either. It’s about beautiful faces, happy endings, explosions, the reinforcement of mainstream beliefs, and the marketing of clothes, toys, and real estate. The so-called plots are frequently designed with these primary objectives in mind, same as in porn.
Lets expand a little, shall we? Porn;
Beautiful faces- Usually. Oh, and sometimes even beautiful feces.
Happy endings- Alway, always.
Explosions- Almost all porn has some. Usually many.
Reinforcement of mainstream beleifs- Yes, most people believe in sex.
Marketing of clothes- Or lack of.
Toys- The naughty but nice kind.
Real Estate- The slow panning of a beautiful naked womens body from the tip of her toes to the top of her head.
I’ve been wondering about this issue ever since I saw the French film “Romance”. If you haven’t seen it, a fairly well known French actress gave a BJ and did a scene involving a gynecelogical examination, among other things.
I was wondering when a mainstream American actress with clout would do something similar. Sevigny and a few other folks who aren’t so well known have done so, but nobody who’s big time famous.
What makes me curious is to see if they could pull it off (um… so to speak) without it being viewed as an a way of just attracting publicity. “Romance” was a good film, and I read that the actress felt OK about it because she didn’t think it was obscene. Rather, the explicit stuff was plot-driven and relevant.
Could this happen in the U.S.?
Lars von Trier’s The Idiots has hardcore sex scenes (penetration, though I don’t remember any money shots), but that movie has unknown (at least in America) Danish actors and has never been released here.
If Nicole Kidman did a porno of the Jenna Jameson type, her career as an A list actress would be dead, but if she did a regular movie with a well regarded director in which she has a sex scene where she is really penetrated, it would create controversy and probably some negative backlash, but her career would survive just fine. Hell, she’d probably get an Oscar nomination.
I forgot to add that I would buy a Nicole Kidman porno in a heartbeat! I think she’s the most beautiful actress around. I just hope if she did a porno she’d do it as a redhead, not a blond.
Kidman does not do full frontal in Eyes Wide Shut. She does do ff in Billy Bathgate(sp?).
