What would make you flee (or fight)?

I very, very much doubt it. If Trump successfully puts a woman on the SCotUS you may tell me “I told you so”. Frankly, I doubt there’s even one woman on the “short list” he says he’ll choose from.

Taking power is the final step, not the first one. They weaken institutions and political systems, then take power. That is what is happening right now - our political system is wounded, and its collecting bacteria. If it continues, gangrene will set in.

Which is nothing compared with Thai politics. Which always made me laugh at those farangs (Westerners) who claimed to have found a more liberated society. Yes in some ways, no in many others, but basically the vast majority of these jokers, from what I could tell, were ecstatic that they had found a place where they could get stinking drunk every single night and laid for the price of a large pizza back home and not suffer too many societal consequences.

In 1975, the Aus Government couldn’t get the budget through parliament. So they were exploring methods of borrowing dodgy middle-east / Russian money instead. The governing party had only limited respect for parliament anyway, and the prime minister had only limited respect for members of his own party. The government was avoiding elections, and believed that going to election was wrong, and that elections should not be held.

My parents were packing to flee the country.

Much as Trump might like to be president for life, untrammeled by congress, I don’t see any signs that is actually happening at present. Nobody has yet suggested that he won’t go to election, or even that he will bypass congress to fund government. Failing that, you just have to wait.
