I think it would also lead to a civil war in the US, as a large proportion of the US myself included would take Canada’s side of the conflict.
I’m not certain what happens if US soldiers square up to Canadian troops. Seriously, they have stood shoulder to shoulder for so long, seeing each other as brethren. That’s a loyalty that runs deep in soldiers. After years of acting in concert, and shared respect, I’m not entirely certain what might play out if pushed.
But on day 1 of his presidency Trump will build enough infrastructure for the USA to produce all the oil electricity cars etc that it currently imports from Canada. All these imports are doing is steeling Americans of their jobs.
I have no idea where he will get the labor to do this, along with producing everything current imported from China, especially with all the immigrants going “home”. He must however know how to do it he is so intelligent I just have not figured it out. He would not possibly lie to us after what he has said about the democrats lying as that would make him look such a hypocrit.
Yes, but most of that is mostly empty space. Occupy a strip of Canada a hundred miles thick along the US border, and you’d pretty much de facto own the rest of the land. The northern communities are incredibly isolated, and dependent upon food shipments for survival. Embargo those shipments for a few months and they’d likely come around.
Militarily, the only way to prevent the conquest of Canada would be if we proactively invited the UK and other NATO countries to establish large military bases prior to the US invasion. Such an invasion will likely require a lot of propaganda build-up, which gives us some time to do this. The hope would be that this build-up convinces the US to back down.
But even in that scenario, if the US doesn’t back down, it just delays the inevitable. Even with large forces in place, supply issues would eventually doom the defense of Canada. It would be far too easy for the US to cut-off resupply efforts, and Canada doesn’t have enough native munitions industry to supply the forces ourselves.
And the attempt to defend ourselves will result in the large-scale devastation of all our cities. Even a “small” war will destroy our infrastructure, and leave us living in the ruins. Maybe the US helps us rebuild, or maybe we end up in refugee camps.
An invasion of Panama has one interesting quirk that the others don’t: There’s only one reason to invade, and that’s the Canal. Were I President of Panama, I’d have a plan in place to destroy the canal at the first sign of a US invasion. Once those plans were in place, I’d make sure everyone in the world knows about them. Militarily, the US could roll them over, but all they’ll be getting in return is a multi-billion dollar, multi-year repair job.
When compared to Afghanistan, one advantage Canada would have is, our terrorist attacks won’t have to happen in our own country. We’d send thousands of people south to strike within the continental US. Even if you catch 50% of them before they do anything, the remainders will enact a terror campaign the likes of which no one has ever seen before. We look like you, we sound like you, we know your cultural touchstones, and we don’t even need to smuggle in weapons or other supplies. There will be people there who will be perfectly happy to sell us everything we need.
It’s one thing to have this syphilitic asshole fucking with domestic policy, but if he started a war of aggression, I hope he would be dealt with, one way or the other. I mean legally, of course. But what do I know? Maybe the US as a rogue nation would be good for the economy somehow.
I sure as hell hope so. And this would be a war against a NATO member. Good lord.
Is now a good time to remind everyone of how a popular campaign talking point was that the world was “on fire” due to Biden? Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Hamas’ terrorist attack were Biden’s fault, you see. Reasons.
It’s good we’re back to calmer times now; where multiple US allies are panicking and working on defence plans against the US before Trump has even been inaugurated.
Why didn’t that work in Afghanistan?
Surely Russia or China could send supplies over the north pole and I’d think they’d be happy to do it.
What if the UK and/or EU supplied Canada. Would the US start sinking their ships?
Hey! Elon Musk is one of us! He’s African… riiiight? RIGHT?
I have previously unilaterally donated his fucking stupid white ass to the USA, but I’ll take him back if my kids don’t get nuked.
His pretext for Greenland don’t hold up. National security. We’ve got subs and aircraft carriers that have nothing better to do than randomly drive around the oceans. Let them drive around Greenland. Economic security. He wants to sell mineral rights to his buddies.
You could well be right.
I’ve only been here since circa 2001 (lurking), and I dont read every thread, but yes.
And I lived through the pan-fried semen debacle.
The Republican party has already shown it was willing to look the other way when Trump tried to overthrow the American government. Why should we expect them to do anything if he tried to overthrow the Canadian government?
(raises hand, quizzical look on my face…)
“I could stand to hear a little more.”
Winter hurts armies in the field. It doesn’t matter much to an occupation.
Now that I have properly snarked, a point or two.
Any invasion of Canada would be a massive logistical undertaking, moving tens of thousands of troops and thousands of vehicles/weapons toward the Canadian Border. Even limited to the most populated areas (Quebec/Montreal/Ottawa/Toronto), that would still mean moving a lot of stuff to a 200+ mile front, and remember, a large number of our troops are based in the South and West. It would take time and probably weeks of preparation before we could do anything and it would be fairly easily spotted.
Much the same for Greenland, it would occupy most of the US Navy’s transports and probably more than a few ‘rented’ cargo and passenger ships to move personnel and material there, and with hundreds of commercial flights across the Atlantic every day, it would probably be easily spotted.
I could see a ‘incursion’ into Mexico, say 15-20 miles beyond the border, being justified by Trump et. al. as "controlling illegal immigrants’ and with major bases located in Texas it would probably be done with less fuss than the other’s above. But that would also disrupt the flow of drugs across the border and I expect the drug czars will take action even if the Mexican army does not. And it doesn’t ‘solve’ the problem, it just moves it by a few more miles south.
Panama might be the easiest, it’s close and we have done something like it before (see 1989), but it would still be a large undertaking and would not go un-noticed before taking place.
And others above have covered the probable global reactions in some detail, so I will not repeat it here except to say any such move will be a long-term disaster for the United States and probably the rest of the wordld
All those are reasons that these will not happen and are simply bloviating by our Dear Leader, we won’t be invading anyone.
At least I hope so…
No doubt.
Something Trump absolutely would not care about. He says go and goes to bed. It’s up to everyone else to make it so.
And the US is very good, maybe the best, at logistics.
It’d still be a colossal mess.
This. The details of which country ends up on which side are difficult to predict, but it’ll be bipolar war with the US and its allies on one side and China and its allies on the other. Only this time both sides would be the bad guy. Cold War I was a battle of Lawful Good vs. Lawful Evil. Cold War II would be a battle of Lawful Evil vs. Chaotic Evil, with the small potential that China might let some of its allies keep their Lawful Good ways as long as they promise not to try to export that ideology to China and Taiwan / mind their own business.
No. You get to use the search like any other newbies.
