You’d be surprised. Lib pitted me once for discussing my plans to go visit a friend who’d just had prostate cancer surgery.
I don’t think I post enough to get pitted, but I’ve been part of groups of people who get pitted. For instance, I run stop signs on my bike. That’s a once-a-year pitting at least.
I’m too boring to be pitted. And I probably would not notice anyway.
Excessive irreverence, frivolity, and not being quite as funny as I think I am.
If that’s what it takes to get Pitted, I’ve got a feeling lots of Dopers are gonna be in trouble!
Well alright!
At least I’ll have some company. It is a fair sized pit, yeah?
One of my threads turned ugly and was sent to the pit after I admitted I installed some keylogging software on my cheating girlfriend’s computer to catch her in the act. I guess that counts as a pitting.
I suspect you were just using language like this to show your point, but I’ve gotta ask…you honestly think “most women” really do that? I wonder why you don’t also have no respect for most men? (Ok, that sentence sounds weird, but I hope I’m clear.) What about “most men” who choose to marry vapid, controlling, selfish harpies who make their husbands miserable and then want sympathy when she takes him for all he’s worth in the divorce? (I don’t think most women or most men do either. Seems like a selection bias.) I’m curious about why the “pieces of shit” or naive men aren’t shown equal distaste? If they are, well, never mind. If they’re not…well, that view just makes no sense to me.
If I get pitted, it will probably be for doing something like that ^^ without any tact, and rubbing someone the wrong way.
Same here.
Plus, I don’t like to get involved with arguments/debates, and I usually keep a tight rein on my emotions.*
Hey, better to be vaguely pitied and ignored than hated, right? Right?
*Or I’m emotionally dead inside, and I’ve gradually lost all ability to connect socially with other human beings…an arguable possibility.
I would say people taking what I say the wrong way, or accusing me of lying. One of those I can’t do a thing about. Some people think making smart remarks are fun and here they are for sure, because you have no one to answer to. But in the real world a smart remark can get you decked, and right quick. I don’t go around making them in public but I will if I hear someone say something off color to another person or threaten them. Some guys just shoot em’ off without thinking about offending someone and those are usually the ones that get whacked. Of course then they act all surprised, “Who me? That’s not what I said.” Whatever. To each his own.
If I ever got pitted directly I’d assume it would be for OTPism. One Tricking (my) Pony over something like mental illness or talking too much about Alice Cooper. Other than that, I way too freakin’ uninteresting.
I’ve been pitted 3 times, to my total astonishment.
For insisting on the truth.
Bastard!
Probably not for anything on the Dope. Most of the time I don’t think anyone notices I’m here, so it might be kind of nice
In life…I’d be pitted for driving the speed limit.
I get tailgated.
Every. Single. Day.
Twice last month I was tailgated…by cops. One made a HUGE deal out of passing me when the road switched to two lanes.
shrug
I used to be a speeder. Then I racked up $1,200 in tickets in four months. While whining about that, someone challenged me to go the speed limit for a week…and see if I thought that I got to places any slower. So…I haven’t had a speeding ticket in YEARS And I always…ALWAYS…catch up to the guy who passed me going 40 in a 25 zone (honking, waving fists, etc) at the next stop light.
I think I’m unlikely to ever be pitted (I’m generally non-controversial and non-confrontational, and when I’m not (not non-those-things, that is), I’m far too much of a wimp to actually say anything), but if I were, it would undoubtedly be for smart-assery.
This comment, for instance, caused some consternation before I came back and explained myself. I might’ve been pitted for that if it hadn’t already been in the Pit. Then again, if it hadn’t been in the Pit, I probably wouldn’t have said it.
For me, it would be my strongly held belief that high gas prices are ultimately good for the US. It really upsets some people.
Being cynical about people who self-diagnose themselves with Asperger’s Syndrome. I didn’t get pitted (and I’m too lazy to look for the thread) but I caught some guff in a thread where people were saying, “I haven’t been formally diagnosed but I KNOW I have Asperger’s.”
My response: “You know what we call that in the real world? Making shit up.
If you don’t have a formal diagnosis, you don’t have Asperger’s.”

Do pittings by **Lib ** count? I have been pitted twice, both by **Liberal ** and one backfired on him and the other was a simple misunderstanding.
I’ve been flamed in the pit a few times, occasionally they are even deserved.
Jim
I did? Wow, cool.
Never heard of a reconciliation being described as “backfired” before. Joke’s on me, I reckon.
