What would you like on SDMB?

Definitely second the “Sports and Games” forum idea. So many people seem to get their undies in a bunch when it comes to threads relating to sports or video games that I think they’ll thrive only if they have their own forum.

If nothing else, it might weed out the “You like sports? Are you a caveman?” additude some posters have.

I agree that Cafe Society should be split up into at least two or three sections. It’s got quite a diversity of subjects, why not chop it up?

One section for artistic pursuits of a nonpersonal nature (i.e. books, film, and television).
One section for recreational pursuits of a personal nature (i.e. hobbies, sports, gaming).

My guess is that the latter would be far less popular, but it would keep both sections more tidy and the subjects more relevant.

Yeah, my enthusiasm for the board is waning, so fix me up with some avatars. That should work in the same way a funny hat always makes an ugly chick appear hot.

Look, no specific type of thread improves the SDMB. If it were that simple, someone would just go start that thread… problem solved. It’s the posters. There needs to be an infusion of more good ones, accepting that some of the past greats are gone for good. I don’t know how you accomplish this. Maybe pay-to-post is finally taking a toll.

I’ll go with a yes for avatars with certain stipulations.

  1. limit the size to something like 64x64, no more than 100x100.
  2. You don’t get to pick your own. Your fellow dopers pick one for you.

That’s all I’ve got for now

Ancient Moonstar of Limbo!
Give me the might!
The muscle!
The menace of Monstar!

Wanna buy a fish?

We towed it inside the lightyear limit.

And you think it can be rewritten into something actually good? I will always have a softspot for Hardware though. This is likely because he is clearly swiped from a Rankin Bass Orc/goblin.

This is my biggest complaint, probably. Also a high Whoosh quotient when it should be obvious the poster was joking.

I so agree on both of these. I keep begging for a home of our own for sports.

I actually have seen this cut down from what it was when I joined, so at least it is getting better. I think it helps that some of the newer mods appear to be sports fans or at least sports neutral. I got away with ripping a poster a new asshole for coming in and shitting in a sports thread for no reason at all. The mod basically did a “I’ll think I’ll allow this”.

However us sports fans and the sports hater would all enjoy it if we had our shared ghetto* forum with the gamers and game threads. (But man, I hope we can still ostracize Nascar fans.) ----->Yes, that was just a joke<------
I would like to see more GDs on Historical stuff and not just religion and current events.

Vole juggling.
Every board I visit there seems to be a distinct lack of discussion of the merits and otherwise of juggling with small, furry mammals.

We could have contributions about technique, style, various breeds etc.
I’ve often thought about dyeing voles fur with luminous paint and THEN juggling them in the dark which I think would be pretty neat myself.

So come on guys, dont hold back ,I’m sure that theres plenty of us out there.
You’re all so shy I sometimes feel that I’m the only person on Earth interested in the subject.

Oh and for any Hamster jugglers reading this keep off, start your own thread.

I’d like to see posts about spirituality. Not the same old tired atheism vs. Christianity debates, but conversations on living faiths and philosophies. There was a great thread here not too long ago about holding on through the rough times, and you could feel the warmth and the support in that thread that is all too often lacking. I wish there were more threads like that, topics to inspire and motivate and encourage. I guess I just wish overall there were more positivity and emphasis on living philosophies.

Me, I could talk all day and all night long about how much existentialism means to me, how much goodness and peace it has brought into my life, but people only really seem to care about the intellectual dissection of the stuff instead of how it can actually impact lives.

And more humor. I love the humor for humor’s sake, especially when twisted into a kind of challenge like the mythology references cited upthread.

I was still lurking during her brief time here, but gabrielle the coroner. She rocked.

More new threads, more often. Seems as though we talk more about less these days.

An Amazon Sponsorship, to defer costs.

Perhaps even eliminate them.

I wish it was easier to search for specific posts without having to wade through long-ass threads.

I think it would be cool if there was a Post of the Week and Thread of the Week. Posters could submit nominations by a certain day and then the winners would be announced. The message board at Salon did this (before it ruined itself by becoming pay-to-play) and it was great. Not to brag, but I won once. I even got a prize: a mouse pad with the Salon logo printed on it. I felt so very special.

This just came to me: It would be cool if we had a Doper classifieds forum, where we could post ads selling/requesting things. Like a smaller, more intelligent Craigslist. There are crafter Dopers and folks trying to raise money for various things that could use it. To prevent spam, the posting priviledges could be limited to members. Anyone itching to spam would be promptly banned.

I love Hardware. My twisted mind insists that he and Melodia have a thing going. But I also ship Mon*star and Yesman (and that is SO wrong).

Silverhawks has great characters, but so many of the stories are unbearably stupid (Music of the Spheres is the absolute worst. It breaks every natural law possible)

I have all the episodes on tape from when Cartoon Network showed them, and I’ve actually watched all of them at least once. My sister got pissed because I kept yelling at the TV.

I have an audio file of Hardware and the waitress at the casino having sex. “Uunhh, huh hah, yes” “Ooh, Hardware!”. I also have an audio file of Flashback explaining how his bird can track somebody down from a used condom.

What about some kind of advertising on the bottom line that dopers could bring attention to their ebay sales ( or personal business) for a nominal fee. Say, $5 a day or $20 for a week for auction sales.
No avatars.
Cause everyone would laugh at my *Sparkly * Glittery Unicorn avatar and then I’d have to open up a can of whoopass all. And that’s alot of work.
And I don’t know how to actually make an avatar.

SDMB needs two things:

  1. Bacon
  2. More cowbell

Remarkably, I agree. (Remarkably because I am atheist.) When I tried to create a thread on being atheist Hindu, the things you said are exactly what happened. I couldn’t put it into words, but people seemed inclined to pick it to death and find out exactly what it was rather than what it did for me, or why I followed it, or anything like that. They kept asking questions like “What is it?” which I didn’t mind, but it wasn’t where I’d hoped the thread would go at all.

I have complained (read: whined) about the Christianity threads here before. All we talk about re religion is Christianity, Judaism, atheism, with a sprinkling of Judaism. I get so tired of the Big Three everywhere you look. I try to post more things about my culture/religion but I’d like to see more, about other cultures and religions.

Bacon Salt and chinese gongs will do nicely, & for less, thank you.
