What would you like to experience?

My family went to Hawaii when I was about 10; visited four islands. We took a boat (a hydrofoil, in fact) between Kauai and Oahu. I seem to remember that that’s the only crossing where you’re out of sight of land at the midpoint. Don’t know if it’s true, or if anyone still runs a boat service between those two islands.

That’s probably true. I know you can see Molokai from Oahu if the air is really clear, then the other islands in that direction are pretty much grouped together. If you look on a map, you’ll see Kauai is quite far from Oahu in the other direction, west-ish. Don’t know about boat service. How long ago was that? I heard that since leaving Hawaii in 1994, some sort of ferry service was started but then stopped on environmental grounds. Sounds like there were a lot of protests.

That was in 1976. The hydrofoil was one of these. According to that page, the service in Hawaii was operated from '75 to '79.

I thought of starting a thread about what unusual forms of transportation my fellow dopers have used. Can’t be too many of us that have been on a hydrofoil.

I grew up in Fairbanks Alaska. You can have the rest of my 60 below weather, I don’t want any more.

Oh, and there’s no “get up in the morning” at that temperature, since it’s the middle of the winter you’ve only got 3-4 hours of daylight. You gotta get up in the dark.

Drive to Seattle, then Portland, ME, then Miami, then San Diego, then home.

I like that idea as well, but then it raises the question what if you had a bad trip on LSD for example, would it still potentially cause psychological problems?

I have a Canadian relative who is used to BC winters (pretty mild) and was given the chance of a huge career boost if he relocated to Yellowknife.

Part of one winter there was enough for him to say, in polite Canadjun, “F*ck that.”

Opposite-gender sex, yeah.

Driving an Indy or F1 car at something like race speeds - not a lower-division car, not a trainer, not a student one, the real thing. Probably wouldn’t survive.

Riding a big booster into space.

A shuttle return.

To stand on any other planet, satellite or space rock. Just for a minute, y’know? (I hate to have reached the point where I have to file that one and lean on, “Well, maybe my kids will.”)

I would love to experience being a gay man having sex with another man, where I am the one doing the penetrating.

Starting this election all over again with difference candidates to vote for !

A threesome with two hot 19 y/o babes that love doing naughty things to a dirty old man in his 60’s.

Well, my current biggest impossible wish would be someday getting to be one of the 75% of 50-year-old American women who still has a living mother…

Sometimes I wonder what my life would’ve been like if I’d been born between 1910-1920 and what I’d of done during WWII if I had a few kids to consider. Or if I’d been born in 1990 and had grown up not knowing a time without the internet. It might be interesting to find out one or both of these somehow.

I’d also kind of like to see what it would be like to be right-handed.

That too.

Multiple orgasms.

I have always wanted to fight a desperate battle against incredible odds.

The Cubs’ postseason is about to begin…

I would like to travel double the distance of the farthest star we can detect, just to see the universe from the other side.

You guys who wanna try heroin? The danger of trying opiates a couple of times are pretty minimal. Plenty of people take opiates with no problems. And it’s not like on TV where you get addicted with one taste and then you’re out giving blowjobs behind the dumpster for a dime bag.

People don’t keep going back to opiates because they’re physically addicted. Anybody can go through detox, opiate addicts do it all the time. You just feel like shit for a few weeks. The reason you go back to heroin is because you like being on heroin.

Also, trying gay sex is a pretty easy thing to accomplish as well. Let’s just say I know a guy. I make a few phone calls for you, and badda-boom badda-bing.

I like this one, you would probably have to ask for the skill to drive it properly as well or as you say it may be a very short, but exciting, experience! A WRC rally car would also be interesting to drive.

That is a good one, there are so many different time periods you could try. I sometimes wonder what my life would have been like if I had been born the opposite sex, so I would like to experience that.

Interesting choice!

Which is exactly why I will never try heroin. I know me.

I knew that was a movie quote, so I googled it. Turns out it wasn’t the movie I thought it was.

The second one sounds more acheivable.

Can I do as the opposite sex, with the opposite sex, combined?
