What ya smokin' in the MMP?

Didja know that turkey’s keep in the freezer for a year? I like to buy three or four turkeys after Thanksgiving for random turkey cravings during the year.

Hubs has a mongo smoker in the back yard and has a variety of wood chips for different flavors. So far, he hasn’t smoked anything that hasn’t been great. Cold smoking is kinda tricky, he says there’s another thingy he needs for that.

Last week I was very ragey over everything so didn’t do anything but stay home and play with our kitten. George isn’t much of a kitten anymore. At 7 and a half lbs, he’s a small cat. He’s still a goofball, though.

Mom is planning on going to the Embroiderers Guild convention in Vegas at the end of October. This is probably going to be the last one she’ll be able to do so I hope she has a great time. These events always have a room where folks rent tables to sell needlework and supplies. Mom has 70 years worth of patterns, books and various stuffs she wants to sell/give away, so she’s going to rent a table and I’ll man it while she is in classes and meetings.

I’m way too cheap to eat there, even on her dime. Breakfasts are 50 bucks each!!! Imma gunna eat the free breakfast the motel supplies and make Mom take pics of her food so I can see what a fifty dollar breakfast looks like!

We have a L’il Chief charcoal smoker, but haven’t used it in years. We liked smoked critter, but it’s a lot of trouble to keep it going, so not happening.

Happy Moanday y’all. I’m off to the showers. We’ve got a notary coming in a bit to witness us signing some papers, so I gotta put on real clothes.

Happy Moonday!

Skipped the park today.
I realized that by the time I picked my son up, dropped him off at the house, and went to the park, I’d have only about a half hour there before I had to leave.
Not worth it.

The notary got here a bit early, which I was kind of expecting. Took almost an hour to sign everything, and that was without the explanations. He offered, I said no, just keep signing. I just did this a few years ago, the only new forms were some covid related stuff. Some of the stuff that has to be done in person may take longer than normal because of restrictions.
My poor son was drooping, he’s usually in bed by 7:30 - 8:00.

Not much getting done today except irk, and it is slow.
Need to finish the laundry I started this morning. It’s still sitting in the washer.

@Taters a friend of mine makes liver biscuits for her old dog when he’s off his feed. She says she got her recipe off the internet. This isn’t her recipe, but its the same. She says to open your windows when its baking.

Posted in last week’s thread: I backed up my computer Saturday morning, and then installed the macOS Big Sur operating system. As expected, Hoyle’s Casino, Freecell, and Sudoku Companion no longer work. Not expected was that I’d lose connectivity to my orifice computer. VPN worked, but Microsoft Remote Desktop didn’t. I tried to use Time Machine to revert to Mojave, but rebooting with Command+R did not bring up my backup files. Through the GQ thread, I found out that I don’t have permission to access my own files. I downloaded Microsoft Remote Desktop Beta, but didn’t have the Host name.

The resolution: Our IT support emailed me at 0900 this morning. (I usually start between 0600 and 0630 on telecommuting days.) She gave me the Host name and I was in like Flynn. So I’m irking.

The permissions issue is more problematic. The Mac store said I’d have to wipe my backup drive and create a new backup… which wouldn’t do me any good, since the whole point of having a backup is to have access to your files in case they’ve been deleted from the computer! They said that Time Machine and Big Sur don’t like each other, and Apple hasn’t come out with a fix. After conferring with another tech, the guy on the phone said I should create a Time Machine backup on my unused backup disc. He said that if I plug in my old backup drive I should be able to access my files because Big Sur won’t be looking for permissions. I’ll see it when I believe it!

In any case, I can connect to my orifice computer so I don’t need to revert the OS. I’ll try the external drive switcheroonie later.

Won’t the spattered grease go rancid and affect future smokings?

Sadly, my spare freezer is small - think under-the-counter size. If I got 3 turkeys, I couldn’t fit much of anything else in there. But this year, I may buy a couple extras and smoke or roast them, cut them up, and freeze the portions. We’ll see.

Anyways, I’m back home. Roxy and I did a puzzle (which was missing one piece) then she got her tablet and while she watched a video about trucks, I surfed a little. Daughter and SIL took advantage of me being there and ran for some groceries, but they still got back shortly after 2. And I’m not needed tomorrow, so that makes things easier on me.

I got spuds at Aldi, and they had a deal - if you bought a sack of 2 chickens, it was 95¢/lb. So I did. I’ll smoke one, maybe both, or maybe I’ll rotiss one, then cut them up and freeze future quick meals. In fact, I may just do that tomorrow.

I started a stew before leaving - it simmered while I was gone - and I just dumped a bunch of carrots in. In a little bit, I’ll peel and chunk some spuds and add them. Voila! Supper!

My Anna Pigeon books arrived in the mail today - Huzzah! Can’t wait to see how the baddies try to kill her in the last 4 books of the series!

This might be a little OCD for you, but when hubs smokes a big piece of meat, I like to pack the meal sized portions into square plastic containers to freeze. After a few days, I tip the portions out and vacuum seal and label them. Squarish portions are neater to stack and take less room in the freezer.

It poured rain last night, twas a fabulous monsoon storm with wind and thunder and lightning. We even got the excitement of having the power go out long enough for BOTH of us to remember and use the emergency light sources we have stashed around the place.

Today I thought I should go out into my shed and dig through my extra needlework books and patterns, but its too squishy outside and I don’t want to go off our porch. At least I don’t need to worry about watering or filling the bird bath.

Afternoon all. They closed the Parks today in anticipation of the bad weather from Ida getting here. Normally I’d grouch about what wusses they are, but I can look at a weather map too and the rain is coming and once it gets here, it’ll be staying for awhile. So no trying to keep up with 7 year old boys today.

End of Line.

Stew was pretty good, but I should have put more onion in the pot. Oh well, it’ll be better tomorrow, of course. And my 4 books were delivered today - I have them stacked in order and I’ll start ready Burn tonight. Or maybe tomorrow - I need to sleep with Mel tonight - I had a short night and I’s tahred.

And now, off to my recliner!

Nevada Barr’s Burn is good, but it seared (choose that word on purpose) nightmares in my memory. Do not recommend if you live anywhere west of where wildfires might occur. Boo wanders off to see which side of the Mississippi Minnesota is……

I’m back. Turns out the Mississippi starts in MN and meanders south smack dab down the middle of it. So think twice about reading Burn if you need to sleep ever again and you live where wildfires might occur. There’s hope that the MN fires might be put out by the winter snowfalls.

swampy, it was sprinkling on my way home from irk and when I walked Nelson. We weren’t indoors more than a minute when the heavens opened up. Auntie Ida’s here for a visit.

Moooooooom, I’ve had a hankering for brisket lately. I was going to suggest cheese before you put the kibosh on it.

tibby, my grandfather used to smoke carp in a smoker he built from an old refrigerator. Grossie would then fix it with a cream sauce. It was a bit salty, but tasty. My dad always snacked on smoked herring like you would jerky.

Irked, beat the hard rain home and am cuddled up with a certain pooch until I do KP.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

In 3 months.

Howdy Y’all! Da cave got spiffed and I managed to fill up twuck and the gas can at Sam’s. I also went to the burly butcher sto’ and bought some ribs and chikin boobs, so now I am committed to smokin’ some critters. We have invited JDD and Partner and our “wives” over Sattidy to hang at the cee-mint pond and partake of smoked critter and fixin’s. Guess that means we’ll actually have to make stuff now. Oh well, we are supposed to celebrate Labor (don’t know what that is anymore).

All y’all in the path of Ida stay safe.

I don’t think I’ve ever had smoked anything that wasn’t lunchmeat. :frowning: (But sometimes I do like a little smoked turkey or smoked ham, as long as the “smoked” flavor isn’t too strong.)

Tomorrow afternoon I go to the cardiologist for my pre-surgery cardiac clearance. I have no idea what to expect: it might be just an ECG, or he might want me to do a stress test of some kind. Hearts tend to be pretty good in my family, even when nothing else seems to be working (heh), so hopefully my blob-like nature won’t be a problem. Then my lab appointment is first thing Wednesday morning: I will be so glad to have that done, (almost) regardless of how it turns out. And on Thursday morning I see my primary care doc, to go over the lab results and — if my A1C is low enough — get her official clearance for my procedure. Big week for me, medically!

I think we’re supposed to get the Ida rain on Wednesday. Not only do I go to the lab that morning, but that’s the day I go to the office. Meh. I might leave after my afternoon in-person meeting and finish the day from home.

Good timing!!

I love my smoker.

We are very fond of Beer Can Chicken:

and ribs:

Gotta admit hippy, that food does look good, even with the beer cans shoved up the chicken’s…ah…rear parts…

Oopsie, hope all the Doc’s sign off for you.

Rain started about 5pm here and hasn’t stopped yet (and the heavy stuff is due about 2am, according to the weather maps). And it’s due to rain on and off all day tomorrow, so no soccer for the Rat on 2sDay either.

Everyone stay dry now.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. the Heat Index is only supposed to be 100 today.

I’m not a Bud fan, but somehow it is the best beer for Beer Can Chicken

“Rectum”
[Medical Joke]
“He had a Bud shoved in his rectum?”
“Rectum? Damn near killed 'em!”[/Medical Joke]

Entirely too easy here. We really need to figure out redistributing all this water.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 76 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 84 and rain for a good part of the day. Our rain is kinda sorta but maybe not really a part of Ida. The big item on today’s agenda is laundry. It shall be a good day to stay inside and dry. Sup shall be grilled poke chops, cheesey broccoli rice from a box (don’t judge!), succotash, and rolls.

Hippie I haven’t done beer can chikin in a long while. Mayhaps you shall inspire me. Cool lookin’ smoker!

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

Minnesota? I was there once on a business trip. I live in Merrylande and I’m pretty sure we’ve not had any wildfires here. Flooding and the rare occasional hurricane, plus blizzards,
but no wildfires. Yet… Or am I misunderstanding you here?

I’m with you there. I don’t want the meat to taste like it was in a house fire, just a little bit of smoky flavor. Mostly, I like that smoking is essentially cooking the meat low and slow for a long time, so it’s really moist and tender. Yum!!

I thought I might try that with one of these chickens. Unfortunately, I don’t think I could fit both in my little smoker in this configuration at the same time. We shall see… Looks yum, tho!

The only problem is we don’t drink beer and I don’t know if we can buy a single small can. I’ve seen larger single cans for sale. I’ll have to investigate.

Mel did his job last night - almost too well! It was after 7 when I woke! :astonished: And it wouldn’t be a big deal except I get Roxy today. SIL got a text last evening asking if he’d work and he asked if I’d keep her. Of course! He needs all the hours he can get. His position isn’t full time, but he works so close to 40 a week. But being a gummint gig, they can’t just magically make him full time. Dammit. If they did, it would take care of their insurance woes settled once and for all.

Anyway, he just texted that they’re on their way. And so the adventure begins!

Happy Tuesday!
