Whatcha Watchin' (April '09) Thread

In last month’s thread I promised to wait a while between posting the Reading and Watching threads, so as not to confuse anyone.

Please note that this is NOT a double post.

Just finished the Dead Like Me movie. It wasn’t too bad. I enjoyed the series and so it was nice to see the characters again. I didn’t care for the new Daisey. I was surprised actually, at the ending. (I think I’ll post the spoiler in a new post, so mouse-over won’t catch it.

OK, so for the spoiler:

The new boss actually turned out to be a jackass, and they offed him. I honestly thought that it would turn out that he was only acting like a jackass to help teach each of them. I thought for sure that George’s failed reap would be a gift from him to her, so that she could reconnect with her sister and have a little closure.

In the queue: 3:10 to Yuma
Californication: Season 1: Disc 1
Angel Blade

I started watching “Buffy” again after stumbling across the first three seasons on Hulu.

I’m still in the midst of the first season of “The West Wing.” I saw the episode with the dead homeless guy and it really upset me so I’ve been stuck ever since.

I’m in a sitcom mood, which is really really weird. I’ve picked up “My Boys” on TBS and watched the last four episodes from last year and put it on my TiVo.

There are a number of shows starting in the next few weeks that I’m going to watch.

I’ve been rewatching The Wire, the first season. I don’t know if I have the heart to finish it though, and might just skip to season two. Wallace!

We’re in the middle of season 3 of Doctor Who.

I’m trying to decide if my almost-13-yr-old son would like Buffy. I think he would like the action, but not the Buffy/Angel angst. He’s reading the Harry Dresden books now, and likes those.

We watched Marie Antoinette on Sunday night, which is generally our designated movie night. We’re also going through 24; friends have lent us a box set of the first six seasons, and we’re in season 3 right now.

We get our new 40" Sony Bravia this weekend – at least, that’s the paln – and the first DVD will be Woodstock. Did you know that a young Martin scorsese was on the crew of that film?

Yeah, I bet he’d like them if he likes Dresden. They both play off the wisecracking noir style.

Almost done with S4 of Doctor Who and S2 of Torchwood. Really enjoying both of them, though it’s easier for me to suspend my disbelief for who than torchwood, mainly because the latter is so undermanned, which bugs me. Still they’re both enjoyable. “Silence in the Library/The forest of the Dead” two parter (who) was really good, with some very interesting time-travel twists, and a nice shout-out to the Matrix.

Up next: all the Oscar best picture nominations from 2007:
Atonement
Juno
Michael Clayton
There Will be Blood
No Country for Old Men

Then S5 of Alias.

We’ve inaugurated our new Sony Bravia Z 40" with Woodstock, Oscar winner for Best Documentary of 1970. Could only watch half last night, though, as the director’s cut is almost four hours long.

Say, is this thread only for home videos or for cinema viewing, too?

Anything you want. Tell us what you’re watching and how much you enjoyed it.

I just started watching Dead Like Me last week. I’ve only seen 3 episodes so far, but I am enjoying it. Just 2 season and the movie, right?
FInished Buffy Season 4 last night and will start Season 5 some time today.

Finished the first disk of the first season of Californication. It isn’t bad - the characters are likable enough, the plots are engaging enough and there is some nakedness.

But I don’t suppose I would recommend it. “Likable enough” isn’t *really *a great endorsement is it? I’ll watch the second disk of the first season, but I’m not sure I’ll watch the rest.

I could have sworn I posted in both the March and April threads. Can’t find either of them though.

My brother and I have started watching Buck Rogers and the original Battlestar Galactica on Netflix watch instantly. We’re obviously crazy, but we’re having fun.

This weekend I watched Punisher: War Zone (mostly sucked, but I did love it when Frank blew that guy up in mid-air), Casualties of War (really good), and Shakespeare In Love (great). A couple weeks ago I watched Dirty Harry for the first time and really liked it, so up next in the que I’ve got the 4 sequels, as well as The Unforgiven and In the Line of Fire. I’ve also got Police Squad: The Complete Series (which is only one disc) and 2001: A Space Odyssey coming soon.

On tv, I’ve been watching 24, House, Lost, The Office, and sometimes the Fox sunday night lineup. I’ve got the Parks and Recreation pilot to watch still, and I’ll probably do that tomorrow night.

I watched I Love You, Man at the theater recently, because I found out that it’s full of Rush references and Rush even makes an appearance. Really, if it wasn’t for all the Rush stuff, I would have hated the film. The dialouge was almost as annoying as that of Juno. But my favorite band being in the film saved it for me. Also, I’m pretty sure the main character is based on me.

Watched two DVDs this weekend. One was the recent remake of 3:10 to Yuma.

The other was Guy Maddin’s Brand upon the Brain. It was good, but I liked his The Saddest Music in the World better.

Still on the third season of 24.

Anyway, I saw Natural Born Killers finally. It was interesting.

This weekend in the cinema, we saw The International, starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. We both found it disappointing, rather flat. Cannot recommend it. We also saw the very good Last Chance Harvey, starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. Very good; this quiet little film is heads above The International.

On DVD, we rewatched Chinatown for the first time in, oh, maybe 16 or 17 years. Excellent, of course.

At the cinema, we watched Crank 2: High Voltage, the sequel to Crank (2006), both starring Jason Statham.

On DVD, we watched the French fim My Best Friend (2006), directed by Patrice Laconte and starrring Daniel Auteuil.
