Whatcha Watchin' (March '09) Thread

Re: your first spoilered point:

I’ve recommended the film to a couple of people by saying “it’s about love.” I think one of the main points of the film is the myriad ways people can love each other, and can show that love. It seems like the filmmakers are saying that romantic, partnered love is actually one of the least important of these.

Finish The Condemned - a thoroughly mediocre action film with needlessly over-the-top violence.

Does it make me sexist to say that I found the violence against women much more disturbing than the violence against men?

The worst thing about it though (as so many of the critics pointed out) was the hypocritical moralizing - we are all bad people for enjoying watching violence.

Produced by Ed McMahon of Pro Wrestling fame, this movie’s premise is that a multi-millionaire goes to a far-off island to create the ultimate reality show - to be viewed via the internet for 49.95. The millionaire goes to 10 countries and bribes the officials to give him convicted criminals who are on death row. He straps a bomb to their legs and turns 'em loose and tells them the survivor will go free.

One of the criminals is truly an evil guy, delighting in the brutality. The millionaire is equally evil in his own cowardly way.

In the end, I not only can’t recommend it, I have to recommend you don’t waste your time. It wasn’t even really good enough for me to say - as I usually do with action flicks - that it helped pass the time while I was on the elliptical.

Just watched Let the Right One In. Wonderful movie.

Just watched Stardust, based on the Neil Gaiman story. Took me a while to get into it (I’m not really a fairy-tale kinda gal), but it ended up being pretty good. I give it three stars, which is my default rating for movies I like but don’t love.

I watched Mr. Brooks starring Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, Dane Cook, William Hurt, Danielle Panabaker, and Marg Helgenberger. They ruined, IMO, what was a great ending, but I understand they thought there might be a sequel. A lot of the subplots were left unresolved, but I really liked it.
