What'd you think of Kathleen Turner as a man? (Or the "Friends" wedding)

Spritle I wanted to check before posting this but we taped the ENTIRE hour of the show. I would not mind mailing it to you just email me at Shanin281@yahoo.com and let me know if you still want it.

I was a little confused at first too, but I think I know what happened. After the rehersal dinner, Candler and Rachel switched for the night. This was probably so Chandler wouldn’t see the bride before the wedding (on the morning of the wedding). While in Joey’s apartment Chandler writes the note and takes off. While in Monica’s apartment Rachel takes the pregnancy test and spaces out, leaving it in the trash.

>>>Well, I have not been keeping up with my supermarket tabs—is Jennifer Aniston expecting a “Pitt the Younger?” That would certainly explain a pregnancy plot.<<<

That’s what me and my mother thought, Eve. About the only time a character ever gets pregnant is when the actress is expecting, and the writer’s can’t think of a way to write it out (like Daphne on “Frasier”). So my guess is Jennifer is going to have a little Pitt, jr. soon.

The Top 40 morning show’s gossip person said that Mrs. Pitt is not pregnant in real life, but Mrs. Arquette is.

I think neither of them is and this is nothing but a publicity stunt, but I’m a cynic.

What I heard was that Mrs. Arquette was pregnant, but had a miscarriage.
I’m a cynic, too, but I find it hard to believe that either one would say she was pregnant just for a publicity stunt, and then say she lost it.

Getting back to the OP, I like Kathleen Turner, but I hate how M to F transexual/transvestite characters on sitcoms (are there ever any F to M?) always seem to be played by women. And usually by well-known women too, so there’s no chance of the audience even thinking that the character actually is played by a real post-op or man in drag. This always struck me as insensitive, and it doesn’t even make for good comedy. The humor in such situations generally comes from straight men and their discomfort with feeling attracted to a good-looking woman who was born a man. I suppose the writers are afraid of making straight men in the audience similarly uncomfortable by casting someone who really was born a man in the roll, but it spoils the joke.

Whoa. My thread got back.

Any particular reason, or are you guys just really curious?

I agree, Lamia, at least in this episode, as I don’t have much experience with transvestites/transsexuals on other sitcoms. I couldn’t see Chandler’s dad as a guy masquerading as a woman. It was too obvious…I would have preferred somethig more real. I guess that’s asking too much of a simple sitcom, eh?

I always loved Friends (the T.V. show. Hey, and RL friends too), but the wedding was the only episode I got to watch this season. I had to make plans and clear my schedule to watch it. It’s nice to read and chat about it here on th SDMB.

I saw last Thursday’s rerun and got all choked up. Everyone was telling me this last season was a dud except for Joey. Monica and Ross got on my nerves, but the two other sub-plots were great. Of course they both included Joey, so maybe “everyone” is right.

As for a female playing the part of Chandler’s father: I think that casting was all about ratings. Kathleen Turner plays a man!!! See it on Friends!!! type dealie. But now that I think about it, I didn’t know she was going to play Chandler’s father before I saw the episode and I’m not sure if it was common knowledge.

There goes that theory.

You see Kathleen playing Chandler’s dad in the episode right before that one…That’s the one when Monica drags Chandler to Vegas to find him. Because she wants his dad there at the wedding, too- Chandler’s reluctant, but at the end he comes to terms with it, and everything’s quite hunky dory.

Your right. I saw that episode too. I was a week early for the wedding and got to actually watch 2 weeks of Friends.

We have four people and two T.V.'s in the house. I don’t care enough about it to argue over it. I spend more time in front of my computer than my T.V.-- I don’t know whether that’s good or bad.

When I really want to watch something, I have to pull rank and make an appointment two weeks ahead of time. [/major highjack]

We now return you to Chandler’s Dad Was Born With A Vagina, already in progress. . .
