Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?---specific question

In the scene where Baby Jane calls the liquor store and pretends to be Blanche, telling them they can resume making deliveries, did they dub in Joan Crawford’s voice, or was Bette Davis really able to mimic her that skilfully?

Lemme change your thread title for you…you’ve got the wrong Bette Davis movie in it.

I always assumed that that was Davis imitating Crawford…she was a talented chick. But someone else might have better information than I.

Ummm… don’t you mean Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

All About Eve is a fine movie, also starring Bette Davis, but it is a different movie, made about 10 or 15 years earlier.

Sorry, I don’t actually know the answer to your question.

It’s been a long time, but when I saw it, my first impression was that Crawford’s voice was dubbed. There was a different quality to the sound and it didn’t match her lips exactly.

Okay, enough shouting for the Cafe. No, you know why I made that mistake? Because the whole time I was composing the post, I was wondering if I should call out Eve (the poster) in the thread title! ARGH!

I am so embarrassed! :o :wally: :smack:

Thank you, Ukulele Ike!

Crawford’s voice was dubbed, to Davis’ consternation and Crawford’s delight. Joan used to drink, and she when drinking would occasionally relish Davis’ inability to imitate her. “I’m an original!” Jaon would cackle.

“Jane, you wouldn’t be treating me like this if I wasn’t in this wheelchair.”

“Butchya Aaaare, Blanche! Ya Aaaaare in a wheelchair!”

I see. Thank you.

(Whoa…Crawford used to drink?  )
