I used to enjoy checking out the wildest and weirdest requests, offers and notes from around the country by checking out the Best of Craigslist For years, there would be five or ten new selections added per day, until early March of this year.
Since then, there’s only been three additions, and none since the 23rd of May. The fact that it’s still linked by the regular Craigslist site, and every ad has a link at the bottom to nominate it for the BoC suggest that it hasn’t been officially disavowed by the Craigslist staff. And that it’s been sporadically updated since it was stopped being regularly updated suggests that it wasn’t a case of the guy responsible for vetting the ads quit, and nobody thought to reassign the duties.
So what’s the deal? Is the Michael Jackson JO Bro ad just the pinnacle of Craigslist weird, and the section is now left as an altar to its oddity? Did it switch to some automated requirement with an abnormally high nomination level to make it on? Anybody know?
I used to be a big fan as well. However, recently (past 2 years) most of them are redundant commentaries about how to pick up someone on CL. As opposed to former things of beauty like the blimp story, I don’t enjoy these as much so I suspect they saw a falling off in percentage of people reading them so it is slowly going the way of the dodo.

Dang, I’ve been trying to figure out what happened to the best of craigslist for months now. It finally occurred to me to try searching here—surely the dopers would know, I thought. And all I find is this dead thread. Even weirder is the fact that this thread is the only evidence I have found that someone besides me is wondering about this. I mean, I know it’s kind of a dorky obssession–but this is the freaking internet, where dork tastes reign supreme. I am working on a conspiracy theory…

Heh, consider that in the past few months the number of “Women seeking Men” ads for Long Island has not only been miniscule, but is often exceeded by the number of “Women seeking Women” ads …
It’s because CL now requires that to place an ad you have to have an account and verify with a phone number. (Well not in all cities or all categories)
But this discourages people from posting. I used to post wacky stuff on CL for the fun of it, when I could creat an ad on the fly. But I am not going to make an accont and give them my phone number and have it verified, just to throw up a joke or observation
