Whatever happened to the real Sonny Wortzik?

SPOILERS FOR DOG DAY AFTERNOON!

In case you haven’t seen it after 27 years.

The movie Dog Day Afternoon was based on a true story about Sonny Wortzik, played by Al Pacino, who robbed a bank to pay for a sex change for his lover and ends up holding the bank and its employees hostage. At the end of the movie, he’s arrested and it is explained that he was sent to prison.

The movie itself was made in 1975, so the arrest itself must have happened even earlier.

Has there ever been any news on what happened to the real Sonny after being sent to prison? Did he serve out his full term? Was he paroled? Did he die in prison? Natural causes? If he’s alive and free, where is he? Is he ashamed of his notoriety? Has anyone ever tried to find him?

I’ve Googled till my Google was sore, but every site I find only talks about the movie. I understand this is pretty obscure, so I’ll be grateful for even half-truths and rumors. I’ve never even managed to find one of them.

(BTW, I’m putting this in GQ because it’s not technically about the movie, but as always, mods, feel free to move it.)

These are the only relevant websites I could find:

Leon got the sex change. She eventually died of AIDS.

One of those mentions his real name, which made it much easier for me to find more some info online. Thanks for the legwork, WW!

It appears that Sonny’s real name is (was?) John Wojtowicz.

There is a mention of a gentleman trying to track him down in Brooklyn.
