… as in Musical Youth’s “Pass the Dutchie on the Left Hand Side”. I can’t believe this hasn’t been asked and answered already, but I did a search. I swear!
When that song was popular, some people said the dutchie was a dish of food and some said it was a bong.
Musical Youth did not write “Pass the Dutchie”, nor was that even the original title of the song. They were covering a well-known rhythm arranged by reggae band The Mighty Diamonds, from their album Changes, called “Pass the Kutchie.” A Kutchie is a Jamaican word for marijuana pipe.
I don’t know what Dutchie means, unless it means “pass the profits from a great regggae band over to a bunch of punky, untalented and unoriginal kids put together by some marketing jerkwad”
Where I’m from, a dutchie is a donut, sometimes called an apple fritter, which is odd, because it’s full of raisins.
I’ve never heard it refer to anything else… and none of my pothead friends have heard of a bong being called a dutchie either.
When “Pass the Dutchie” first came out and the fact of it being a remake was made known, the kids in Musical Youth (or their dad, or whatever) claimed that “Dutchie” was a cooking pot in Jamaican dialect, vs. the Pot of the original…
A heavy cooking pot with two handles and a tight lid is called a “dutch oven.” I believe that’s where “dutchie” comes from.
A dutchie can also be someone from the coal regions of central Pennsylvania. Also know as Pennsylvania Dutch who are not even Dutch at all but German.
My Jamaican friend in college said that, yes, it is a marijuana pipe.
This is exactly right, as there were concerns to a blantant marijuana reference being sung by kids, so they changed the words to something close, but it is essentially nonsense.
For some reason we were discussing this song in my walking group the other day. The damn song is still echoing around in my head, which makes it one lonely thought.
It’s the next step in a romantic relationship after a French kiss.
The territory ruled by a Dutch Duke?
In that song they say, many times, “How does it feel when ya got no food?” I think dutchie must mean something food-related. Dutch oven seems to make sense.
I answered it yonks ago! Here.
UP here in Canada, we call a particular kind of donut a dutchie.
Basically, it’s a brick-shaped donut that is glased overtop, and has raisins in it.
Gag Raisins… Damned Cancerous grapes that they are…
Well, I might be there before too long, so pray tell: What is the next step?
So you did … I guess I didn’t search MPSIMS. Now, what does “yonks” mean?
I always thought a “dutchie” was the British version of a “doobie.”
Pass the Whatever,
Patty
A ‘dutchie’ is when you smoke dope in an enclosed area, so you get stoned not only by smoking, but by breathing. The term comes from dutch oven.
I don’t think that’s what the song is refering to, though.
