American Smarties = “Rockets” in Canada.

Smarties (the chocolate ones) are one of the many treats I miss about home which also include Coffee Crisp, Aero Bars, and Hawkin’s Cheezies.

After a little searching on Google I believe the UK version of the US Smarties are called Refreshers.

I’m sure they used to have different packaging though… Maybe a long time ago (I try to avoid too much sugar).

Edit: Damnit, the above poster is correct. I knew those refreshers looked wrong. We have Rockets over here too.

Those US Smarties are smaller in diameter than Refreshers. They look more like Swizzels Fizzers (scroll down a bit).

I thought there were two basic reasons:
(1) The Americans lived there, and the British Army had no real stake in the country.
(2) The North Atlantic Ocean makes it slow and expensive to send supplies or reinforcements to your troops on the other side.

No, it’s because the French were convinced to join the American effort, providing amusing taunts until the ka-niggits ran away.

I can’t BELIEVE that there is a crazy mixed up land where people go around calling those halloween candies “smarties.” This is like finding out that there’s a parallel universe just like ours except that there, cats are known as kangaroos.

Interesting. We have a candy called Smarties here in the US. There’s no chocolate involved though. There’s actually not much involved other than sugar. They’re round disc shaped with the big sides being concave as opposed to flat. They come in a twisted up roll.

I went through this exact discussion when I travelled with people from the States to Europe 20 mumble years ago. I talked about Smarties and they thought I was crazy thinking of the citrus sugar bombs instead of the chocolate sugar bombs. Someone then produced a little cellophane of the Smarties they were talking about.

They’re gone now - they don’t use artificial colourings any more, so they now consist of rather more muted tones of green, yellow, pink, purple, red and brown (possibly, also white, but I don’t remember)

We’ve still got the nice bright ones, including blue, here in Canada.

Hershey’s Kisses suck, for a start. How can you possibly eat something that looks like someone started a bowel movement and then gave up? Not because of the superior quality of the chocolate, either.

Hershey does suck, tho. Then again, so does Cadbury, except for their Cream Eggs. I suspect our Cadbury and their Cadbury are different, otherwise I have to say that Brits can’t be trusted …

Nope, they’re two seperate companies. Although it is true that The Hershey Company distributes Cadbury chocolate products in the United States, the company has its own American division, Cadbury Adams USA, which distributes non-chocolate candy and gum in such familiar brands as Trident, Bubblicious, Sour Patch Kids, and Swedish Fish.
