What's black and white and red all over?

Depends on where staggerlee is writing from. AFAIK, horsemest cannoty be sold for human consumption in US. No such restriction on zebra.

Was there any indication as to where the zebra was from? Raised for game hunting in Tennessee? Or imported from somewhere in Africa? I’d be asking a lot more questions about where my meat was from, personally. Bushmeatis a significant threat to conservation.

How is it that I didn’t know about this place? Now I know where to go for all of my python needs.

Dunno, but it’s worth a trip. It’s at the very end of Charles Street, near the Charles St. -MGH stop on the red line. It’s a pretty small shop, but you’ll end up going down the line at the freezers saying to your companions – “Look at this – they’ve got LION!”

I was so ravenous I discarded the packaging without paying much attention, but I think the exotic meats in that particular butchers’ is just farmed in the UK (where I am). Then again, their website does say their meats come 'from all over the world" - http://mjdaltonbutchers.vpweb.co.uk/Exotic.html
So I may have made somewhat of an ecological boo-boo.

Taking the thread title very literally:

The menu assured that all the meat came from animals raised to the purpose.
I was disappointed that they were always out of elephant when I went there.

Obama, after farting during a speech?

The law was changed last year. Horses can be butchered and eaten in the U.S. again.

Keep in mind, soylent centaur is made of horse people.

I never understood the big deal about horse meat. They’re making a big ruckus in France about it right now. I get that people want to know what they are eating, but everyone acts like it’s less healthy or something.

I find it odd that the same nations whose kids are the only ones who can watch chicken nuggets be made and still want them are so bent out of shape from horses. Food is food.

It (mostly) isn’t about the horse meat itself - customers were sold adulterated product that wasn’t what it said on the tin. That means that other labels (such as “Intended for human consumption”) are called into question. People may not like how chicken nuggets are made, but they eat them in the assurance that they are safe and intended for human consumption by the relevant authorities. They did so with readymade “beef” lasagna - they may not do so again for some time.

I certainly foresee a change in eating habits in the UK as a result of the crisis - less reliance on processed meats from overseas, more home cooking, and a rise in food prices as supermarkets implement rigorous testing regimes and shift to local supply chains away from the lowball suppliers.

I agree with “si_blakely”. This is about getting what you paid for. Unless people are willing to begin butchering their own meat and grinding their own grain, they’re going to rely on government inspectors to verify that the food they purchase is safe and has been prepared/packaged as stated on the label. Does this product contain peanuts? Is it Kosher? Does it contain MSG? When was it packaged? Was the tin container sealed with lead solder? Does my horse meat contain beef byproducts?

“Contains all natural products” doesn’t mean anything but it certainly sounds good. Lead is natural. Mercury is natural. Anthrax bacterium is natural.

People want what they paid for, not what some corrupt, unscrupulous , or criminal party decides to feed them.

Answer: A holstein in a blender.

Dude, that zebra steak was just cow meat. You’ve been had, and should expose the fraud in to the press.

I’ve had horse meat sashimi in Japan. And it was not sliced thinly, either. There was much more chewing involved than I would have preferred…

I remember on an episode of The Tonight Show back in the '70s or '80s, Doc Severinsen (who apparently was into horse breeding and related activities) served Johnny Carson a hamburger made from horsemeat. Carson could barely tell the difference between it and a beefburger, though he did identify the horsemeat as being “a bit sweeter.”

Zebras are, I believe, closer to mules than horses. If you’ve ever heard one vocalize, they bray rather than whinny.

I was shopping at my local supermarket (in Moscow) not long ago, when I noticed cans of horsemeat on the shelf, next to the tinned beef, pork, and lamb. So far, I haven’t tried any, but I’m not all that surprised they carry it: in the dairy section, they sell kumiss, which is fermented mare’s milk. It’s a Central Asian delicacy that’s something of an acquired taste. (It also stinks to high heaven!)

Only the Grevy’s Zebra, and they are closer to wild asses, not mules. Mules, of course, are hybrid animals (a cross between a horse and donkey) and are not a species at all.

:smack: Of course. I should have said either donkey or ass. D’oh!

Are you sure it was real zebra? I went to a Panda Express, but the meat just tasted like chicken.
