After seeing him a bit on the telly in the last few years, he seems to have disappeared completely lately. Is he still doing music, or is he up to something else (apart from being an Islamic evangelist)?

He is not making music as Cat Stevens. He now is Yusef Islam and only makes Arabic/Muslim/Islamic music.
He just re-released (and "re-mixed/re-did) Peace Train. I believe he may have put out an album, but I’m not sure.

He’s still writing music, but it’s really, really bad “music”. It’s Islamic and about as unsubtle as you’d hear on the PTL club or some such.
I mean: “A is for Allah”? Even as an Islamic kid, I suspect I would have gagged.
I’ve heard two of the albums he’s released under the name “Yusif Islam” and there’s not a single good song on either.
They’re tuneless, heavy-handed and lyrically bad.

PS: Yes, I’ve heard middle-Eastern music that I’ve enjoyed. No, I don’t object to the message being religous; but I do object to it being either PTL Club level bad or “Jesus luvs me/this I know/'cause the bible/tells me so” level stoopid.
And, as is always the case, whenever an older artist tampers with his younger work, the new remix destroys everything good and fresh in the original. (George Lucas, Elton John, Stephen King take note).
Well, he did a promotional tour in spring 2000, put out an anthology in 2001, after that, dunno.
