The birthplace of American punk rock, CBGB’s is undoubtedly one of the most famous live music clubs in the country. The letters “CBGB” actually stand for: “COUNTRY BLUEGRASS BLUES,” what club owner Hilly Kristal had intended the club to stage. However, we all know the club took quite a different turn. The OMFUG stands for: OTHER MUSIC FOR UPLIFTING GORMANDIZERS. Whatever.

No wonder it’s not spread around.

I had never heard of this, but a quick google search reveals this:

The Acronym stands for, Country Bluegrass Blues & Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers. According to club founder, Hilly Kristal, a gormandizer is, “A voracious eater of music” (Kristal)

I think that’s actually “gourmandizer.” A gourmand is a voracious eater (as opposed to a gourmet, who is a discerning eater).

As a regular attendee at CBGB’s, I can attest that the above is true.

Hilly still owns and runs the club, BTW. I’ve never asked what he thinks about the inappropriateness of the name.
