Last week I started trying something new for lunch at work: Slim-Fast shakes and fresh fruit. I alternate between Slim-Fast snack bars and those Nabisco 100-calorie packs for the afternoon munchies. I’m still eating whatever I want at home, but I figure I do most of my eating at the office and if I can make some changes here, who knows, it might just help. I won’t turn down lunch invitations, and I’ll still order lunch every now and then, but the majority of days – when I would have just gone to the deli – are now Slim-Fast days. I’m also cutting way back on the free soda that my company provides: I already only drink water at home, but I’ve been having 3-4 Diet Pepsis a day here. Now the rule is that if it’s a Slim-Fast day, I only drink water.
So today’s lunch was a Slim-Fast Creamy Milk Chocolate shake, 2 large pieces of canteloupe and 1 large piece of watermelon, and a 100-calorie pack of Wheat Thins. And water.
Are you drinking the canned Slim Fasts, or mixing the powder with milk? I’ve tried the canned shakes, and they taste nasty to me. The powder mixes, though, are actually not too bad, especially if they’re blended with ice as directed on the package. I really wish the canned shakes tasted better, they’d be a perfect solution for times when I have to be out running around most of the day.
I had my usual before-work breakfast: a mozzarella string cheese stick and a glass of water.
Lunch, as usual, was more exciting. Today I nuked a leftover marinated chicken thigh (boneless and skinless), put it inside a warm pita bread pocket with a little crumbled pepper jack cheese, thin-sliced onion, and Israeli salad I made last night (chopped tomato and cucumber tossed with EVOO, lemon juice, kosher salt, and pepper).
Except for the “sensible breakfast” part, you got it.
I’m drinking the canned ones – I’m way too lazy to have to mix anything for lunch. So far I’ve only tried the Creamy Milk Chocolate flavor, and it’s palatable. The only thing I don’t like is that it’s way sweet, which all of the flavors seem like they will be: I don’t have a very big sweet tooth to begin with, and when it’s lunchtime I want food, not a milkshake! I’m going to the grocery store on my way home today, and will get some of the Strawberries 'N Cream and Cappuccino Delight shakes. I don’t think I’ll like the French Vanilla or the Rich Chocolate Royale flavors.
I had homemade pizza with pepperoni, salami, calamata olives, imported mozzarella, fresh basil and garlic, and washed it all down with a VitaminWater, with a cup of applesauce for dessert. Yummers!
